The Dietetic Internship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is a post-baccalaureate certificate program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND). Interns receive 1200 hours of supervised practice in clinical nutrition, food systems management and community nutrition with a concentration in disease management / health promotion. All disease management rotations are completed within the VUMC system and include rotations in MICU (medical intensive care unit), cardiology, liver disease/liver transplant, trauma, ICU (trauma step-down, burn, eating disorders, surgical intensive care unit, neuro intensive care unit), med/surg, oncology, acute care geriatrics, pediatrics, and outpatient clinics.

The role of the Weight Loss Consultant (WLC) is to provide support and coaching to help clients gain the skills and knowledge to change their lifestyle and achieve and maintain their weight loss goal. The WLC creates individualized meal plans for clients, meeting with them weekly as they set short and long-term goals for success. The WLC also creates personal goals for weight loss percentage and client retention.In addition to the traditional roles of the WLC, I also facilitated numerous center staff meetings and conducted new-employee training sessions.

Focus Treatment Center of Tennessee (Knoxville) is an intensive outpatient program for adult women and pediatrics with eating disorders. The nutrition intern works under the supervision of the registered dietitian who is responsible for the nutrition status of women with binge eating disorder, anorexia, bulimia, and eating disorders not otherwise specified. The nutrition intern co-facilitates weekly 3-hour group sessions and one-on-one client sessions. Additionally, she participates in weekly treatment team meetings and prepares bi-weekly "Gentle Eating" therapeutic meals. She creates individualized meal plans for clients and reviews weekly food journals, highlighting any obvious food/mood connections. Finally, the nutrition intern modifies and creates original resources for use during group sessions.
