Profile bio

About James Keating

I am a Principal Consultant with a PhD in fisheries science, and over 15 years’ experience including ports, commercial and recreational fisheries, mining, construction, oil & gas and offshore renewables. With the help of many great mentors and colleagues, my career has led me to focus on environmental scoping and approvals within the resource sector. More recently I have shifted towards addressing some of the challenges associated with the birth of offshore renewable energy in Western Australia. If you're bored enough to follow my posts, you'll see its my ambition to see these capital projects through from inception to decommissioning (if I'm around long enough). My passion for stats, modelling and coding has shown fruit in the development of an iOS application for marine environmental professionals working in the offshore sector. What started as a pet project to while away the time working offshore has become a commercial product with over 1,000 users worldwide in a very niche market.Outside of my profession, I have dedicated over 10 years to emergency service volunteering and currently hold the role of Captain with the WA Volunteer Fire and Emergency Service and Team Leader with the WA State Emergency Service.

Listed skills include Fisheries, Fish, Scientific Writing, Scuba Diving, and 16 others.

2008 - Mar 2013

Field Technician

Newport, Mayo

As a field assistant, I provided technical assistance to the scientific officers over a variety ofprojects run at the aquaculture and catchment management unit of the marine Institute:Project: Fish Stock Assessment:Data on salmon, trout and eels were collected daily from fish traps. Otoliths and scales were prepared for growth and ageing. Salmon and eel were sampled comprehensively in the lab to monitor the status of the stock, and wild salmon were ‘floy’ tagged to monitor their movements. Juvenile fish stocks were assessed by elecro-fishing. Other methods employed included seine netting, phyke netting and push netting.Project: Environmental Monitoring:The surrounding catchment was monitored using a variety of methods. Weather buoys were installed and maintained on the lakes. Data was recorded daily from a Met Eireann weather station. Flow rates were calculated using salt dilutions and flow meter in water courses. In-situ monitoring was achieved using sigma recorders and rain gauges and these required regular maintenance and download of data.Project: Fish Rearing Unit:Salmonoid species were reared in a dedicated hatchery and on-growing unit. Hatchery care was undertaken from egg to first feeding (cleaning, hand feeding, and salt treatments for parasites). Juvenile salmon and trout were fed using Arvotec and Ewos feeding systems. Pond temperatures and oxygen were monitored and recorded. Batch weights and grading were conducted to assess optimum feeding rates. Disease/parasite monitoring and treatment was fundamental in the day to day schedule, and conducted in compliance with EU Directive 2006/88/EC to ensure a risk based health surveillance scheme. Fish transport was undertaken when releasing smolts into the wild. Other seasonal tasks included stripping of brood stock, fin clipping and sea lice vaccinating.

Marine Biologist

Blacksod, Belmullet, Co. Mayo

Project title: "A study to investigate the seasonal succession planktonic communities and basking shark distribution".This project used dedicated land and boat based surveys to determine presence, abundance and distribution of basking sharks in NW Mayo. During boat surveys, samples of phyto- and zooplankton were taken at fixed sampling stations, in order to determine any seasonal change in plankton abundance and diversity. Primary production was established based on in-vivo absorption measurement of chlorophyll a. These measurements, combined with the analysis of the plankton diversity and abundance were analyzed to give an insight into the plankton community, its seasonal trends, and productivity.
