Kurt is a power generation engineer in Hatch’s Power Business Unit. Kurt has worked on many power generation projects around the globe, ranging from baseload coal-fired power stations in south-east asia, Nuclear SMR integration studies, BESS integration studies in the Australian NEM at key distribution and transmission nodes, to the integration of some of Australia’s largest renewable energy infrastructure projects such as Sun Cable, AAPowerLink and CIP, Murchison for integrated Solar, Wind and BESS systems to export electricity or green hydrogen/ammonia internationally.Kurt manages multi-disciplinary power generation studies and works on projects to integrate power generation technology mixes, whilst recognising the dispatch challenges of semi-scheduled renewables and Inverter Based Resources (IBR) with diminishing grid inertia.

Kurt worked on projects in the Power, Energy and Mining sectors.

Kurt utilised numerical modelling techniques (FEA, DEM, CFD) and High Performance Computing Clusters (HPCC) to solve, optimise and design mechanical and processing equipment for Industrial sites around the globe. Kurt has worked with clients such as BHP, BMA, FMG, NorthVolt, Glencore, Mosaic, Nutrien, PotashCorp, Newcrest, PT Freeport McMoRan, Red Leaf Resources, Exxaro, Guinea Alumina Corporation, GFG Alliance, Liberty OneSteel, BlueScope Steel and South 32.

As part of an Integrated Sun Cable / Hatch / Bechtel / SMEC JV Kurt was a integral member of the project delivery team. Initially, Kurt was brought in to manage the proposal for the offtake agreement to secure an import licence of 1.75GW of firmed renewable power into Singapore. Kurt’s initial scope was to manage all technical deliverables, for the Power Generation and Transmission infrastructure, such as the 4200km HVDC Subsea Cables, 800km of Overhead HVDC Transmission Lines, 16GW of Solar PV and 30GWh of BESS Integration. His scope was later expanded into other areas of the proposal such as the carbon abatement strategies, and project financing. Furthermore, Kurt worked in the Overhead Transmission Team focussing on the development of the 800km HVDC Transmission line, transporting over 6GW of renewable power at 525kV to Darwin. Kurt’s role encompassed all of the transmission line packages from Early Contractor Involvement, HVDC Interactions and system studies, to stakeholder engagement and transmission line and conductor feasibility design.Through this, Kurt also developed bespoke software to quantitatively advise on the feasibility of constructing the transmission line within the railway corridor. The software was able to optimise between various routes, railway corridor and transmission easement widths, tower span and structural complexities, geotechnical and environmental considerations, route curvature and ‘straight-lining’, land acquisition costs, required land tenure, native title, and stakeholder engagement and many other parameters. The software was built in Python, Java and HTML with visual outputs displayed on Google maps for data validation and visualisation. Quantitative outputs where also created and assessed within a pre-defined multi-criteria analysis framework.

Kurt was tasked with developing the backend software for Australia’s first COMputerised BETting (COMBET) platform for the Australian Horse Racing Industry. Kurt developed the code from initial concept to deployment. Furthermore, Kurt developed the backend Infrastructure and tools to analyse the stochastic statistical characteristics to optimise the parameters for transient conditions. This was conducted primarily with Monte-Carlo Analyses. Upon launch, COMBET had processed $1.9 million AUD in payments within the first 12 weeks operating in the NSW and VIC betting markets. As part of an integrated BHP / Hatch / Bantrel JV team, Kurt led a team of 5 BMH engineers utilising numerical modelling techniques and high performance computing clusters to conduct the pre-feasibility, feasibility, and detailed design of the mechanical and processing equipment for the BHP Jansen Potash Mine. In this role, Kurt worked within a larger multi-disciplinary team to ensure the effective integration with other services, equipment and disciplines.

As part of a Integrated FMG / Hatch team, Kurt led a team of 5 BMH engineers utilising numerical modelling techniques and high-performance computing clusters to conduct the detailed design of the mechanical and processing equipment for the FMG Ironbridge Magnetite mine, and brownfield integration with Port Anderson. As part of a multi-disciplinary team, Kurt was responsible for the integration with adjacent equipment, services and disciplines, whilst also responsible for the delivery of the equipment design and validation of the numerical models onsite.

Preventative & reactive maintenance of Mport body mapping machine.- Provided input into root cause analysis and subsequent resolution of issues affecting equipment reliability- Ensured day to day availability and maintenance of the machines wireless telemetry and control systems.

Kurt worked in the Contemporary Quantitative Risk Analysis Services part of the buisness, which encompassessed project Cost Risk Analysis, Schedule Risk Analysis, and Integrated Cost and Schedule Risk Analysis.Furthermore, Kurt received the TBH Innovation award, for developing a custom API and software to integrate with various project management software and reporting tools, such as Primavera P6. This tool automated over 10 hours / week of work per project it was implemented on.

Kurt completed an intersnship in the Water Design and Operations team.
