Kyle Smith is the Forest Manager for The Nature Conservancy of Washington where he develops restoration strategies and leads a team of professional foresters who conduct ecological forest management and river restoration across 80,000 acres in Washington. Current projects that Kyle manages are the Ellsworth Creek Preserve in SW Washington, The Hoh River Recreation Area and Conservation Area, the Clearwater Forest Reserve in the Olympic Peninsula, and the Central Cascades Forest in Eastern Washington.Kyle is a Certified Forester with the Society of American Forester and is passionate about conducting cost-effective forest restoration and ecological forestry at large scales. He believes that the science-based approach TNC is taking towards forest management in Washington is creating sustainable solutions that support local communities, fish and wildlife, recreation, and ecosystem services such as healthy forests, clean water and carbon sequestration.

Leads The Nature Conservancy's Forest Program to meet the ecologic and economic goals of The Nature Conservancy’s 8,000 acre Ellsworth Creek Preserve, 3,088 acre Clearwater Forest Reserve, 2,300 acre Queets Forest Preserve and the collaborative partnership with the 7,000 acre Willapa National Wildlife Refuge. This includes: designing silvicultural and restoration prescriptions; engineering forest road and road decommissioning projects; conducting in-stream salmon restoration projects; developing, preparing, and administering contracts for a wide variety of restoration projects; developing annual budgets; preparing and writing grants; conducting forest stand mensuration; and managing a forest inventory database for The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and USFWS Willapa National Wildlife Refuge.

Prepared and managed contracts for projects involving the silviculture and young stand management program. This included: reforestation, pre-commercial thinning, site preparation and invasive species control. Worked directly with contractors to manage and coordinate scheduling for projects associated with the reforestation program; assisted in the preparation of the annual operations budget; maintained database of stand treatment records; prepared reports; created silviculture maps using Arc GIS; conducted invasive species management. Fieldwork consisted of conducting stand exams, contract administration and inspections, field reconnaissance, stand monitoring and providing silvicultural treatment recommendations.

The work was centered at Bunchgrass Ridge, a 100-ha mosaic of dry montane meadows and encroaching forests in the Willamette National Forest, Oregon. Observational and experimental studies at Bunchgrass Ridge address a variety of questions including:• the history and correlates of conifer invasion•associated changes in vegetation and soils • the importance of gopher disturbance•the potential for meadow restoration using tree removal and prescribed fire

Instructed students in tree identification and tree ecology, prepared and gave lectures on tree characteristics and forest ecology, constructed dendrology database, researched lecture topics and evaluated student quizzes.

Assisted with The Uneven Age Management Study within the Willamette National Forest. Worked individually and as part of a 5-person crew conducting ecologic monitoring and forest measurements on ground cover shrubs and herbs, measurements of dead and downed wood, measurements of live tree species within the study area, created transect and study plot layouts using compass navigation and map reading.
