During my first four years at Voya, I worked exclusively for the broker-dealer in a communications role, and was responsible for a wide-range of projects released to Voya’s field of 2400-plus independent financial advisors across the U.S. I worked closely with compliance, operations, sales and marketing leaders to create campaigns and communications to help advisors run and grow their businesses. In 2014, my role was expanded to include strategic content development across Voya Retirement, which included project work for plan sponsors, plan participants and individual investors.

When I first joined The Principal, I supported Principal Bank where I managed onboarding, advertising and retention campaigns – both consumer and advisor-facing. A year after I was hired, the bank marketing department merged with Principal Retirement Investor Services, and my role expanded to include project work for the retirement plan side of the house. I was fortunate to have been hired and mentored by a brilliant marketer – Kitty Reed – who took the time to teach me the fundamentals of the financial services business. Kitty passed away from colon cancer in 2009. I remain grateful to her for all she taught me about marketing and living life to the fullest – even under the most difficult circumstances.

As marketing director for the Art Center, I was responsible for the strategic planning, implementation, and budget management of the institution's multi-faceted local and national marketing and communications initiatives and activities. It was a big job with lots of responsibility--I didn't fully realize how big it was until I left for corporate America and discovered big companies employ many people to do the job I did every day at the Art Center. I wore many hats and kept lots of balls in the air during my time there. My favorite part of the job was working with the local and national art press and learning about the fascinating world of contemporary art!

As was the case at the Art Center, I wore many hats at Dowling which is Iowa's largest private high school. I was responsible for the planning and implementation of all marketing and communication initiatives for the school as well as the president's office. Perhaps the most valuable thing I learned was the fine and delicate art of public relations and working with the media - in good times and in bad! My years at Dowling seem like a lifetime ago - but more than 15 years later I remain close to the many friends I made there.
