As a graduate assistant, I was responsible for the upkeep of our environmental toxicology laboratory, including organizing and maintaining lab cleanliness, supplies, and sampling equipment. The majority of funding for my graduate stipend and research came from the college of pharmacy as well as various grants awarded by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, which focused on non-point source pollution loads into local watersheds. We used some of these grants to incorporate research involving environmental impact to the local aquatic organisms. Much of our work with the grants involved collecting and transporting water samples from various sites along the watershed to a testing facility in order to identify areas of concern, with the goal of implementing best management practices (BMPs) to help reduce non-point source (NPS) pollution loads into the watersheds.Through these grants, we also participated in educational programs involving local primary education schools to educate students on prevention of NPS pollution in their neighborhoods, as well as yearly household hazardous waste collection events and bayou clean-up days of the bayou running through campus.
