ReAssure has 4m customers, £80bn of AUM, SII annual surplus of circa £500m, 3500 employees. At time of appointment, was owned 75% by SwissRe and 25% by MS&AD. Hired as CEO to divest and then grow the business. After an attempted IPO – Swiss Re’s preferred route – in difficult market conditions (which nonetheless generated significant investor interest), the business was ultimately sold to Phoenix Group at the top end of the IPO range.

Centrica is a multinational energy and services company and the largest supplier of gas to domestic customers in the UK. Consumer facing businesses comprise c.10m customers, £11b revenue, £1b operating profit, 30,000 employees. In the UK, British Gas Energy and Services and Hive; in the US, Direct Energy (which has recently been sold for £3.6b); and in Ireland, Bord Gáis Energy.Member of the PLC Board and Group ExCo with responsibility for all customer facing business including British Gas, Hive, Direct Energy (US) and Bord Gáis Energy (Ireland). Hired out of sector as a change agent to simplify and modernise the business to make it more efficient, more customer-focused and less product led; to significantly improve digital channels; to grow new revenue streams; and to evolve the culture.

Towergate is Europe’s largest independently owned Insurance Distribution business, focused primarily on specialist insurance needs. Serves 2m customers, insurance premiums of £3bn and Revenues of £400m. Acquired by private equity firm Advent International in February 2011 and remained part-owned by the founder.As Group CEO, key achievements included: formulation of a group strategy which was unanimously supported by the board; recruitment of new executive team and significant strengthening of management below the executive (35 new recruits within top 70 leaders); complete rebuilding of governance and operational control frameworks of business to bring in line with regulatory standards; significant investment in previously non-existent control and support functions (Audit, risk, finance, legal); three re-financing processes; rebuilding regulatory confidence in the business, management team and the board; a fundamental operational restructuring; acquisition of 50 specialist insurance businesses; and review, investigation and resolution of multiple historical regulatory issues.

Aviva UK is the UK’s largest insurance company with 19 million customers served through the Aviva and RAC brands, Insurance Intermediaries and Banks. It is the leading bancassurance partner in the UK. Revenue in 2010 was £15bn and grew by 19% in long term savings and 6% in general insurance. Profits grew by 21% to £1.4bn. The business has a marketing budget of £250m, an IT change budget of 250m and employed 20,000 people in the UK. It had major out-sourcing arrangements in the UK and India which represent a further 4,000 people.During a 20-year career, rose through senior ranks to be Managing Director of Norwich Union General insurance, Chief Executive of Norwich Union Life (now Aviva UK Life), before becoming CEO of Aviva UK in 2010. Appointed member of the Executive Committee from 2007 and Plc Main Board member from 2008.
