I am a global equities investor looking for a new challenge, having left my previous role as a global equities portfolio manager. In that role, I built a £1bn fundamental, global value portfolio of 50-60 stocks with a medium term investment horizon. The fund was long only and index unaware. The West Midland Pension Fund is a £14bn scheme that manages the pensions of public sector workers around Birmingham. I established the Fund’s global active equities capability on arrival and managed the Fund with a small team. I was also responsible for monitoring the external global and emerging markets funds held by the Fund. The West Midland Pension Fund has recently been ‘pooled’ to form LGPS Central. My first position in the City was as a private client stockbroker at Goldman Sachs in 1992. However, after completing a second degree in Investment Analysis, I joined Fidelity International in 1994, and have specialised in fund management ever since. I spent 14 years at Fidelity as an analyst and fund manager and managed both pan-European and global funds. At the time of my departure, I was running £2.2bn, most of which had been raised via institutional marketing. All the funds that I have managed outperformed over the course of my tenure. I am an associate member of the CFA and have the ASIP designation. My first degree was in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Christ Church, Oxford. My key investment influences have been Anthony Bolton, whom I worked for and with for many years, Warren Buffett, Charlie Munger and Sir John Templeton. My annualised outperformance since commencing my portfolio management career has been 3.8% although this has been flattered by very strong early numbers.

Portfolio Manager, Head Of Global Active EquitiesWest Midlands Pension Fund Sep 2014 - Jul 2018Birmingham, United KingdomI ran the £1bn Global Active equities portfolio. Position size ranged from 1.25-3.0% and I have a contrarian value tilt, and tend to look at stocks that are cheap, and often out of favour. On average, I am looking for stocks that will provide a 30% total return on a 2-year view. My approach is fundamental and research-intensive. Apart from looking for value, my portfolios have additional overlays of strong balance sheets, considerable liquidity, and management teams that I am prepared to back. There is also a big focus on the reduction of risk. I established the Fund’s global active equities capability on arrival, arranging for all the trading and brokerage accounts to be opened, negotiating commission rates, setting up a global network of sell side research, and designing the fund’s structure. I managed the Fund with the assistance of a small team, and some administrative support, whom I recruited. My team also monitored the external global and emerging funds held by the Fund, and contributed ideas with regard to overall Fund asset allocationThe research process involved extensive reading, exhaustive cross-checking, conference calls & travel to see companies and attend conferences, and there was a wide-ranging company database. There was regular company contact, and some broker contact. Portfolio turnover was low, and I had a slow moving, price sensitive style, and almost always used limit orders. -
