The role included developing proposals and funding to achieve the charity’s objectives and to secure the future of my project team. This involved working with partners to develop bids from Central Government, EU funding bodies, Local Government, Lottery and major donors. I managed a team of engineers, landscape architects, urban designers and transport modellers, working across the North of England to undertake a range of land and public realm-based projects. Recent projects include securing major funding of £22m from the DfT and an additional £3m from Highways England to develop a series of cycle routes across the North of England. This funding is aimed at improving the National Cycle Network (NCN) for all users and making it more inclusive, but also developing the NCN as a green corridor of enhanced biodiversity with its maintenance secured through working with community groups that live alongside. This includes track refurbishment, habitat creation and tree planting. I am involved with many other funding streams and undertake projects supporting cycle superhighways, rural greenways and habitats and urban realm design, from initial strategy and route selection, through preliminary design and costing, consultation and benefits appraisal. I authored bids to Local and Combined Authorities as tender responses or negotiated opportunities as well as undertake bid preparation for grant funding including from Landfill Tax and European sources. I was also required to develop effective partnerships and manage contacts and opportunities through a CRM system. I provided technical content to walking and cycling strategies, including the DfT’s Local Walking and Cycling Investment Plan programme, the Isle of Man Active Travel Strategy and the Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) cycling strategies.

My role has included all facets of a major highway project from the original cycle strategy, to bid creation, to outline design, to consultation, detailed design and I will also be supervising works on site in a communications and quality management role. The project has been hugely challenging as we seek to strike a balance between the desire to provide cutting edge UK cycle infrastructure and the needs of local people, in particular frontages, plus maintain the operation of a major transport corridor.

This role included a wide range of Local Government and Transport related tasks including strategic planning (including creation of the Leeds Core Cycle Network), report writing, public (and often difficult) consultation and presentation. I also acted as client on the 1.5m pound Regent Street cycle route.
