About Mark Thomas
Researcher and engineer in all things audio from DSP to UX, currently a Principal Researcher at Dolby Laboratories in San Francisco leading a research group in the capture, creation, coding, transporting, perception, and rendering of spatial audio for both professional and consumer.I graduated from Imperial College London with an MEng in 2006 and a PhD in 2010 prior to starting an industry career at Microsoft Research, Redmond in 2011. There I contributed to spatial capture and rendering for consumer products including Kinect One, Hololens, and Surface. In 2015 I moved to Dolby Laboratories, contributing to the capture and coding of Higher Order Ambisonics, audio for cinema, audio coding, and most recently as a research lead on Dolby Atmos FlexConnect.I enjoy working with both theoretical and practical problems in:Spatial audio capture and reproduction: Cylindrical and spherical microphone arrays, Fourier acoustics, Higher Order Ambisonics, beamforming, reproduction via head related transfer functions and loudspeaker arrays, acoustic scene analysis, content creation workflows.Multichannel Acoustic Signal Processing: Adaptive and closed-form microphone array processing including robust optimal beamforming, acoustic echo cancellation, supervised/unsupervised system identification, robust system equalization and geometric inference.Glottal-Synchronous Speech Processing: detection of glottal closing and opening instants from speech and EGG signals, data-driven models of speech and applications of glottal-synchronous methods to speech processing.Outside work, I enjoy music production, playing piano in my new band Aurora Paradigm, home theater, Hi-Fi, photography, and making/breaking things in my workshop.
Listed skills include Signal Processing, Matlab, Audio Processing, Speech Processing, and 18 others.
