About Martin Johnson
We believe business can be more human, natural, more like an organism rather than organisation. I'm the Founder @YourBigPic and the Creator of BIG PICTURE the collaboration tool. Here's my story:In the 2000's I was working client-side alongside big consultancies. At the start it was a real buzz but I was getting frustrated I couldn’t be part of the kind of changes I knew we could make. We were leaving colleagues isolated and their upset was rubbing off on me. I was grrr I was seeing the same missed opportunities. It was personal, and it was becoming a reputational risk to me as a Business Analyst.We would be expecting so much from individuals with a day job to do. We expected them to just take what we told them and do what we directed them to do. It wasn’t working and I felt like apologising to them on behalf of the change community. It was making me sad.The Director would come to me to ‘do that thing’ when I go and talk to a team. He waved his hand ‘that thing you know?’ .. ‘oh and there’s a Board meeting next week so ‘do that other thing’ when you get everyone around the table nodding’. He waved his other hand. Why me? What was ‘that thing’ he was waving his hand at?! It got me thinking ..I realised I was helping the wider team relate to what we were doing - using doodles in my day book to point at and so share exactly what they thought. I called it the ‘.. yes and ..’ conversation. I was finding out so much! All the moving parts of the organisation on one page. It felt like I had turned a massive tap on!I had everything that the senior team needed and I could engage them in the same way. They soaked it all up as I took through a summary of exactly how it all fit together. They nodded, validated and added to. We had the whole community onboard and all the insights we needed to create the outcomes we needed. The big consultancies weren’t so happy- but the genie was out the bottle and they were no longer holding the ace cards.This was ‘that thing’.It was too valuable to keep in my day book and is now available in different shapes and sizes, physical and digital, as BIG PICTURE- the collaboration tool.Realising it was been used to solve some of the 'hard stuff' we created YourBigPic. Senior Business AnalystTransport For The North Jul 2018 - Dec 2018LeedsTfN is a Sub-national Transport Body (STB) formed to transform the transport system across the North of England providing the infrastructure needed to drive economic growth through the Northern Powerhouse. The Integrated Smart Travel (IST) Programme is a large-scale transport project to assess, design and implement integrated and smart payment and information. As Senior BA Martin was responsible for Target Operating Model (TOM) Deliverables engaging directly with Partners and Operators Commercial and Operational teams, Third-Party Suppliers, Local Transport Authorities (LTAs) and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs). Key responsibilities:• To de-risk the Invitation to Tender (ITT) using a series of tactical Process Mapping Workshops focusing on the priority areas of Operator Onboarding, Compliance and Marketing & Communications. Drawing on earlier User Needs analysis the result was a validation of existing requirements more significantly the identification of amended and new requirements for the ITT submission; and• To create a new Single Purpose Vehicle (SPV) Organisation by defining the Processes, Organisation, Location (Infrastructure), Information, Suppliers and Management Systems (Operating Model Canvas POLISM). Focusing on a Value Stream approach as a central axis by piecing the earlier Process Maps into an End-to-End Process for Paying Customers and Operators respectively. -
Project Manager & Lead Business Analyst- Stockbroking Change TeamLloyds Banking Group Jan 2017 - Jun 2018Leeds And HalifaxThe team is dedicated to meeting customers’ needs through Lloyds, Halifax, Bank of Scotland and iWeb brands using Agile Methodology in Jira. With an execution only dealing service Stockbroking are one of the big five investment platforms with a ~10% market share. The Stockbroking Change Team is responsible preparing and supporting individuals, teams and systems to improve the way the business is run. Key responsibilities:• Central Securities Depositary Regulation (CSDR) Programme- One of the key European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) regulations Martin took over responsibility for the delivery as Project Manager. Key Deliverables were End-to-End Process Maps, Pricing Model and both internal Team Briefings and external Customer Communications. The result was delivery of the capability to offer Segregated Accounts to Customers pending confirmation of the Compliance Date;• Data Protection Act (DPA)- As lead of a Scrum team focusing on Business-only changes Martin was responsible for managing a new process for the retention the deletion of Colleague Data held for ten years. Key Deliverables were the ‘Feature Brief’ (Epic) and User Stories. The result was delivery of a compliant solution;• EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Programme- Martin was responsible for the Scope and Requirements for Stockbroking in line with the Group approach. Martin led the analysis with the business for complex capabilities of the regulation: Marketing Consents and Data Privacy Notices (DPNs). Key Deliverables were the ‘As-is’ and ‘To-be’ Business Process Modelling for the Operating Model Impact Assessment, Issues and Risks;• Stockbroking Marketing Preferences- The legislation, as it was, stated that, to be compliant, consent must be freely given, specific, informed and a positive choice;• Intermediaries Improvements- Martin was responsible for the Scope and Requirements to bring Intermediaries Processes and Systems into line with the Group’s Policies. -
Senior Business Analyst Strategic Technology Partners (Stp) TeamDepartment For Work And Pensions (Dwp) Aug 2016 - Nov 2016Leeds And LondonThe team was responsible for managing the strategic level relationships with supplier partners. Key responsibilities:• Flexible Delivery Centre (FDC) Requirements- Feasibility work to assess how FDCs could complement and support the Department’s Target Operating Model (TOM) through leveraging supplier assets including accommodation; people and access to capability building through shared recruitment and apprenticeship schemes. As a new concept within the Department this work involved working with challenging senior stakeholders requiring a series of presentations and communications using persuasive reasoning. The result was approval for the ideas pending resource and funding challenges;• Internal Team Target Operating Model (TOM)- Definition of Vision, Mission, Outcomes and Services to help determine the team structure and focus. The result was a clear and agreed mandate for the ways of working of the newly assembled team. -

Identified by the GLD board as a priority for investment to improve the quality of the legal work and at the same time deliver efficiencies for the business. Martin supported the Project Manager at each stage of delivery. Key responsibilities:• IT Solution Delivery- Martin was responsible for the business and systems analysis on individual workstreams within the project adopting principles of Agile Development:o Close Case- ensuring all tasks are complete before a case is closed - delivered April 2015;o Bulk Credit Notes- grouping a number of notes into one to help the client - delivered April 2016;o Standardised Ways of Working- a consistent way of entering data at case opening;o Client Monies- handling of the monies that one party pays another once a case is settled; ando Management Information- gathering of requirements from senior level stakeholders.Martin was responsible for ensuring all requirements were met by tracing through each of the workstream products including development and agreement of the Business Rules and Acceptance Criteria. He worked collaboratively with the internal development team to agree the best solution. Consideration of the full impact of the implementation was developed in the form of a Business Impact Assessment working and supporting the SME.• Operating Model;• Business Case;• Project Management Office (PMO) support;• Assurance; and• Feasibility Studies. -

Led the activity to challenge and negotiate across the team to make clear recommendations and action plans. With stability restored the role developed to include responsibility for supplier performance and chairing the weekly ‘Delivery Review’ managing the integrated plan. With key relationships in place Martin facilitated a series of team away days and Lessons Learned events. Key responsibilities:• Senior Business Analyst responsible for the delivery of interfaces - facing off to suppliers to ensure the solution integrates with ~7 interfaces and supplier plans;• Supplier Performance- establishing and refining new ways of working (IBM & HP-ES), weekly tracking of resources burn against estimates to ensure best use of the project budget;• Senior Business Analyst responsible for the Integrated Planning for the project- developing a clear structure plan and chairing the weekly ‘Delivery Review’ for the project leads and suppliers to report and track against. Identifying and working through the resolution of issues;• Phrase Capture- led a multi-supplier team to design and manage three successful runs of the update process; • Project Management best practice – simplifying the checkpointing process making best use of people’s time, identifying and putting Lessons Learned into action.

Senior Business Analyst Mortgages IntegrationLloyds Banking Group Jul 2010 - Apr 2013HalifaxThe largest mortgage integration programme undertaken in Europe combining the sales system used by HBoS and the existing servicing platform used by Lloyds and C&G. The programme consisted of a series of releases to integrate a target delivery solution then migrate all accounts over to the new platform. Key responsibilities:• Providing a lead role for the team managing the workload against the plan and developing best practice;• Facilitating workshops to gather and document requirements and functional areas of change;• Establishing and maintaining relationships with developers (onshore and offshore) and testing teams;• Ensuring requirements were traced through analysis, design, QA System Test and UAT (see below);• Maintaining relationships with 3rd parties (Accenture and Unisys) for effective team working;• Business process re-engineering (BPR) to improve operational effectiveness and customer experience;• Production of functional specifications for both the User Interfaces (UI) and back-end processing jobs;• Provided support for the ST, SIT and UAT testing phases by helping resolve defects with the business and technical teams both on and offshore;• Worked closely with IT and Business Architecture the ensure the solution aligned with group objectives;• Clear reporting to Project Management to ensure pro-active resolution of issues;• Provided a point of contact for change requests and defect resolution.For six months Martin fulfilled an IT Lead role for rolling out the Lloyds Mortgage Sales Platform (MSP) to 164 Cheltenham and Gloucester (C&G) branches.
