Mike Brubaker has been working on environmental health issues in the circumpolar north for over twenty years, with a concentration on achieving safe, healthy, sustainable communities. Born in Juneau Alaska, Mike earned a BS in Biology from St. Lawrence University and a MS in Environmental Management from the University of San Francisco. He was an environmental planner for the Peace Corps in the early 90s working in Hungary. He spent ten years as Community Services Director at the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association, a regional tribal non-profit health consortium serving the Unangan people in Southwestern Alaska. While there he was active with the Arctic Council and instrumental in the formation of the Aleut International Association. He also worked on assignment for the US Environmental Protection Agency assisting rural communities in Eastern Russia to monitor and clean up environmental contaminants. For the past 12 years, he has worked for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium where he directs statewide environmental health services. Much of his work has focused on performing community health impact assessments and he performed the first climate change health impacts assessments in Alaska. Mike is founder and director of the Local Environmental Observer (LEO) Network and is the managing editor of a weekly e-journal, The Northern Climate Observer. He co-chairs the One Health Group with CDC's Arctic Investigations Program providing surveillance for emerging health and environmental emerging threats in the circumpolar north. He is associate faculty at Alaska Pacific University where he directs the Center for Climate and Health.
