MIchael Wolfe is the author of a 11 books of poetry, travel, history, and fiction. His work has appeared in many magazines and journals. A MacDowell Colony Resident, he has received the Amy Lowell traveling Poets Scholarship, a Citation from the Academy of American Poets, two California Arts Council grants, and other awards. He has taught Writing and English at Phillips Andover and Phillips Exeter Academies, the California State Summer School for the Arts, and the University of California at Santa Cruz. For 15 years, with help from the NEA and a handful of Bay Area typopgraphers and designers, this kitchen-table operation based in Bolinas, California published numerous books by prose authors including Jim Carroll, Lucia Berlin, Douglas Woolf, Dale Herd, Stephen Emerson, Bobbie Louise Hawkins, Mohamed Mrabet, Larbi Layachi, and Paul Bowles. Alternately during this period Tombouctou produced numerous books by mostly Californian poets including Lewis MacAdams, Larry Kearney, Duncan McNaughton, Bill Berkson, Michael Wolfe, Tom Clark, Gailyn Saroyan, Jim Gustafson, Joanne Kyger, Barry Gifford, Clark Coolidge, Jamie MacInnis, John Thorpe, Stephen Ratcliffe, Dottie LeMieux, Donald Guravich, John Clark, Phoebe MacAdams, Richard Duerden and Leslie Scalapino. In small paperback runs and signed limited editions, the books were distributed by Book People, Subterranean, and Publishers Group West. Often priced at $5, the titles are now collectors' items, disturbingly expensive and hard to find.
