4 PARA is the Reserve Battalion of the Parachute Regiment and consists of volunteers who have civilian employment. They are fully-trained parachute soldiers who dedicate a significant amount of their free time to the Army.The unit is spread nationally with bases in and around London (White City & Croydon), Scotland (Glasgow & Edinburgh) and Central England (Leeds, Liverpool & Newcastle); with this national footprint, 4 PARA recruits throughout the UK.4 PARA supports and assists the Regular Battalions in their operational and peacetime roles, through the provision of both fully formed company groups and individual soldiers. The Battalion trains routinely at weekends; however, there are opportunities for operational service for those who seek it.

I worked for the Winnipeg YMCA-YWCA Camps Branch out at Camp Stephens, Lake of the Woods for eight spring & summer sessions from 1990 to 1997.I started at camp using my engineering skills by volunteering on the Operations 'Ops' Team to build some of the camp buildings, re-float some docks, built some decks, build the Lodge stairs, repair numerous canoes, use the chainsaws wherever possible and generally keep the place going.I then moved onto leading children and teenagers in various outdoor activities and pursuits. This is where I first learned about leadership and how to canoe. In 1995 I joined the Wilderness Team leading 2-week canoe trips. In 1996 I was lead tripper for the co-ed 3-week canoe trip on the English River and in 1997 co-led the famous six week boys canoe trip into remote north west Ontario.Camp Stephens is such a wonderful place. The work is challenging but so fulfilling. My time there was truly a memorable experience and will remain with me forever.If you're relatively young and thinking of a career in leadership, then please do seriously consider cutting your teeth at a kids summer camp. If you can successfully lead kids, you can successfully lead anyone.
