About Michael P Totten

Since the early 1970s I have been training as a planetary physician, which requires immersion in life-long learning in transdisciplinary thinking about the complexity of reality. I am the founder & CEO of ASSETsforLife.net, an Internet-based COllaborative Innovation Network (COIN) platform initiative focused on accelerating the transformation of cities to emission-free energy systems over the next decade-plus. Over the decades I have closely collaborated with several of the world’s foremost innovators including Amory Lovins and Jeremy Rifkin. I am co-author of A Climate for Life: Meeting the Global Challenge (2007), and as Conservation International’s Chief Advisor on Energy-Water-Climate co-led the design initiative for Walmart’s sustainability development goals (2005+). I served as Chief Advisor to U.S. Rep. Claudine Schneider (R-RI) where I drafted the first major USHR legislative bill on preventing climate chaos (Global Warming Prevention Act of 1989). In the 1990s working with a passionate group of young innovators, we pioneered the use of the Internet, interactive multi-media CDs & apps to help catalyze ecologically sustainable development practices and policies worldwide, through the Center for Renewable Energy & Sustainable Technology (CREST). We were honored with the Lewis Mumford Prize in 1999 for these advocacy initiatives, given by Architects, Designers, Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR). In 1979 I served as Executive Director of President Carter’s Clearinghouse for Community Energy Efficiency. Among my numerous publications include: Local Alternative Energy Futures; Energy-Wise Options for State & Local Governments; The Road to Trillion Dollar Energy Savings; and, ASSETs for Life: Wealth Generation Network (work-in-progress). For the past decade I have served as Pearl Jam’s Climate Advisor, calculating the CO2 emissions of the band's tours, and advise on ways to reduce emissions, shift to renewables, and invest in certified carbon offsets.

  • Assetsforlife.Net
    Founder & Principal
    Assetsforlife.Net Sep 2012 - Present
AssetsforLife.net is about catalyzing knowledge networking of tools and resources to assist citizens, cities, companies accelerate the transition to emission-free utility, mobility and other energy services. Tackling the dynamic complexity of this challenging undertaking requires the use of two powerful and complementary Web-based innovations - COINs, a technical acronym for COlaboration Innovation Networks or Collective Intelligence Networks, and Geospatial Visual Mapping. ASSETs is an acronym summing up the use of these twin tools - Apps for Spurring Solar and Efficiency Tech-knowledge. Assets is also about harnessing local human and social capital, to leverage information/knowledge capital, in order to effect changes in civic capital, resulting in accessing financial capital to tap the natural capital of the sun, wind, and biowastes to achieve emission free cities and rural communities. For background see my article in the Wiley series on energy and climate security, "GreenATP: APPortunities to catalyze local to global positive Tipping Points through collaborative innovation networks" posted at http://www.scribd.com/mtotten6756

I have been a strong promoter of Amory Lovins & colleagues at RMI for more than 3 decades. RMI's Reinventing Fire framework and methodology provides the road- and action-maps for eliminating fossil fuels in the U.S. over the coming 4 decades (as well as nuclear power), while unlocking $5 trillion in savings (NPV), on top of $500 billion per year in avoided social carbon costs. RMI is now partnering in developing a similar Reinventing Fire road- and action-map for China. Their on-the-ground "deep dive" expertise is helping profitably accelerate emission-free cities (Fort Collins, CO), campuses (Arizona State Univ., Colorado State Univ. in Ft Collins), Utilities (Hawaiian Electric Co.), corporate building and transport fleet assets, and military bases (distributed solar generation and microgrids). And so much more, check out: http://www.rmi.org/reinventingfire Attached is one of my staff presentations on using Collaborative Innovation/Collective (Intelligence Network platforms to accelerate and scale solutions to climate destabilization like RMI's RF initiatives enable.

Focused on delivering utility and mobility services at least-cost-and-risk, through end-use efficiency gains, onsite solar, distributed microgrids, connected to polygrids of onshore and offshore wind farms. Developed portfolios of prioritized market and governance actions for cost-effectively addressing the unprecedented challenges of global and historical magnitude confronting society: climate destabilization and catastrophic risks, the 6th largest species extinction episode of life on earth, more absolute mass poverty than any time in human history, and resource wars & conflicts. Specific focus of opportunities in and for Asia-Pacific nations for pursuing healthy, sustainable economic development.
  • Conservation International
Chief Advisor, Climate, Energy & Green Technologies
    Conservation International 2000 - Oct 2011
    Arlington, Virginia, Us
Directed a cross-cutting initiative on climate, freshwater, energy, healthy, sustainable “green” economics, and ecosystem services, engaging the private sector and public institutions to implement a climate mitigation Triple Strength risk-minimizing portfolio of their operations, products and services, and adoption of innovative public policies and regulations. 1) SHRINKING ecological footprint through continuous efficiency gains; 2) SHIFTING to utility and mobility services with smallest composite impacts footprint (land, water, emissions, pollution, price volatility, etc); 3) SOURCING multi-benefit, standards-based conservation carbon offsets of threatened ecosystem services.Helped organize and initiate Walmart's sustainability practices and policies beginning in 2005. Advised and assisted in developing global corporate sustainability initiatives in cost-effectively reducing CO2 emissions in corporate operations, products and supply chains. Initiated development of the world's leading multi-benefit standard for monitoring, evaluating and verifying land-based carbon offset projects - the Climate, Community and Biodiversity standards.
  • Google.Net
Senior Advisor On Climate & Energy (On Assignment From Ci)
    Google.Net Jan 2007 - Sep 2007
Advising Google on developing large-scale, global climate change solutions initiatives, with major focus in China, North America and Europe. Developed strategies for applying Web 2.0+ tools (e.g., map mash-ups, peer-to-peer production, mass collaboratories, wikis, and plug-in gadgets) for accelerating insights, understanding and actions on climate solutions; proposed initial application to help accelerate greening of supply chains in China. Also prepared a brief on win-win-win economic growth opportunities with royalty-yielding "cash cows" on Great Plains farms and ranches; while collapsing fossil fuel use in the utility industry (and increasingly the transport sector as well), accruing cost-free deep carbon reductions, and rural and urban air, water, and soil pollution and wastes. Moreover, the pressure to over-ranch, or plow annual grains can be cost-effectively replaced with deep-rooted herbaceous perennial prairie grasses and free-roaming bison, offering eco-restoration of the heavily degraded and eroded Great Plains soils, migratory flyways, while also serving as an excellent climate adaptation initiative that reduces the threat of "dust bowlification" that is a looming risk. Although written in 2007, the strategic opportunity remains more valid than ever.Documented global-scale opportunities for harnessing ultra-low-footprint energy systems to protect and restore threatened ecosystems, using the grasslands of the Great Plains as a case study for illustrating region-wide eco-restoration, sustainable economic development, and dramatic reductions in national CO2 emissions and water use.
