Carter is a skilled reporter and editor with more than 40 years experience in print and online journalism. In 2010, he was the senior reporter on The Seattle Times' Criminal Justice Team, which led the newspaper's Pulitzer Prize-winning coverage of the murders of four Lakewood, Wa., police officers and the manhunt for their killer, Maurice Clemmons. In 2014, he was part of a team that won a special award from Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) for coverage of the Oso, Washington, landslide that claimed 47 lives. The Seattle Times won the Pulitizer Prize for that coverage.In 2014, Carter was among a team of reporters who responded to and investigated the cause of the Oso landslide, which claimed 43 lives. The Seattle Times was awarded the 2015 Pulitizer Prize for breaking news coverage and a special national Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Award for the coverage.Carter's worked on "The Terrorist Within," a groundbreaking 18-part investigative narrative about the radicalization of Ahmed Ressam, the so-called Millennium Bomber. The series was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting in 2003. Carter was among the reporters assigned to explore the deep Washington State connections of Beltway Snipers John Muhammed and Boyd Malvo. That coverage was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News. Carter is currently an assistant metro editor at The Seattle Times, where he oversees coverage of breaking news, courts and criminal justice.
