Profile bio

About Mark Johnson

I have an extensive background in power generation (including coal, natural gas, hydro, wind, and solar), and the HR needs of that industry in multiple countries. My formal HR career began in July 2000 with TransAlta. For the past 9-years, I have held leadership roles, managing small teams. From 2019-2021, I have had direct accountability for 4-6 HR Business Partners ("HRBPs") providing support to the US, Canadian, and Australian operations. That support included annual performance, salary and talent assessment cycles, succession planning, employee relations, organizational design, disability management, performance management, and labor relations, etc. From 2017, the organization I supported ranged from 1,900-1,000 employees. The employee reduction was primarily due to the phase-out of coal in the US and Canada, and related support staff reductions. I led the HR planning for those US and Canadian phase outs.My accountability included 12 labor agreements with 8 unions. Since 2000, I have participated in approximately 15 rounds of bargaining and have been the Chief Spokesperson in 9 of those. I have experience in Mediation in both the US and Canada. Since 2010, I have demonstrated the ability to manage complex projects across the organization. I have also worked effectively with senior Leaders to understand and respond to their needs. The HRBPs reporting to me are highly regarded by their client groups and have been able to provide effective support to the business. In addition to my success in leading HRBPs and teams, I was an effective HR practitioner from 2000 to 2011, helping the business manage the workforce on multiple levels. I was able to improve the business’s ability to enhance employee performance by simple, pragmatic strategies that discouraged poor performance and behavior, and encouraged solid performance and behaviors. For both employee relations and labor relations matters, a key to positive outcomes is ensuring that the right steps are taken from the outset. I have helped the business understand what the right initial steps are, and take them – simplifying follow-up actions, and significantly reducing downstream complications, challenges, and liability. I have also taken an active role in other business improvement initiatives. where my and/or my team’s expertise adds value to ensure better outcomes. An example would be TransAlta’s response to the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020 across three countries. I believe that I have the skill and experience to create value in your organization on multiple levels.
