Profile bio

About Mingrui Sun

Hello! I am a robotics engineer and Ph.D. candidate at the University of Melbourne, specializing in compliant robotics and human-robot interaction. I design and build (even from scratch!) robots and wearable sensors, especially for healthcare applications. My current research - I focus on the R&D of a Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO) and its core, a Series Elastic Actuator (SEA), that brings soft and smooth physical human-robot interface (pHRI) experience in gait training. This involves a multidisciplinary approach, collaborating with physiotherapists and engineers, designing and constructing hardware, and developing complex models to understand system behavior. My side hustle - With a team of University of Melbourne researchers, we developed an ultra-thin flexible sensor that measures muscle activities (EMG). Extensive design-evaluation iterations on both electronic circuit design and nanometer-scale electrode materials led to a prototype that outperforms commercial EMG sensors and is robust to motion noise. Passionate in translating research into practical, market-ready solutions has led me to contribute to the commercialization of this project and securing early-stage R&D funding. My community work - Being an active committee member of the Mechanical Engineering Research Student Association (MERSA) & Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Association (SOMA), I envision bringing human-centered research methodology to and fostering an enriched community for interdisciplinary research/non-research students to inspire and facilitate bio-innovation.
