After graduating summa cum laude at Furman University, I am certain that data science is my way to make this world better than when I found it. Data science is centered around the idea of revealing hidden insights that will most objectively help others. My willingness to improve others around me is centered in my 5 (well, 4.5, thanks COVID-19) semesters as a calculus and statistics tutor, and additionally a Python, R, and introductory machine learning lab aide. Watching mathematical or computational information click in people who do not see these things on a regular basis is among the most satisfying feelings in the world to me, and enlightening my future clients with data-driven insights should naturally engender the same sentiments.I was a Summer Mathematics Undergraduate Research Fellow for two years, and I was a member of three distinct projects over this time. In 2019, my peers and I developed a hotel recommender system in Python for first-time guests at Walt Disney World, leveraging machine-learning algorithms in the process. In 2020, a completely remote environment, my first project involved applying operations research concepts to optimize minimum set-cover problems in 3-dimensional space. My second project that year involved developing a Java GUI for a customizable MLB baseball swing shift optimization model, which I recently have taken steps to recreate better. As part of my senior analytics practicum, I worked on a team of Furman peers for the consulting firm Mather Economics. We implemented various linear regression models for subscription prices and a logistic regression model for subscriber churn, both in the R programming language. In the last couple weeks of the project (in spite of senioritis), we added a random forest model in Python to substantiate the logistic regression with improved accuracy. Most importantly of all, I greatly improved my teamwork and communication skills, especially when corroborating with a corporate client. These skills will serve me well in a real-world data science position.I have experience in statistical packages in R, machine learning libraries in Python, and linear algebra; but that is not where I want my growth to stop. I will never be content with the state of my growth. I am currently learning Julia, Javascript, and data engineering skills to supplement my pursuit of a MS degree in Analytics from the Institute for Advanced Analytics at NC State University. For me, the ultimate goal is to develop and learn everything I can in order to become a data science professional.
