Working with a team of 11 of other Public Allies, implemented a six-week internship for Hartford high school youth focused on urban beautification. For seven months we met with each other and various members from the city to coordinate this project. Collaborating with city officials, community based organizations and others allowed us to provide this opportunity to 17 students. The youth were engaged, attentive and receptive to our curriculum. With their input and our guidance, they completed their chosen community service project – a clean-up of a local park, including graffiti removal and painting creative art on oil drums used as trash cans. While completing this project was their goal, it was mainly a vehicle for them to learn other valuable skills – leadership, accountability and empathy.Additionally, as a Public Ally Alum, I have worked with other Alumni to engage in policy work around OPPORTUNITY YOUTH - the 6.7 million young adults in the U.S. who are both out of school and not working. These young people are most in need of opportunities to get onto meaningful pathways to education and careers. PA afforded me an enormous opportunity and I want to help influence legislation to progress programs and initiatives that advance work on behalf of this population. I speak a little about my personal connection to this work in this podcast - http://www.ipadio.com/broadcasts/RaulVasquez/2012/8/30/Oscar-Alexander-Robles-Connecticut-11 Show less
