My principal role was to teach groups of volunteers the fortnight-long Science Development Programme (SDP). This involved giving a series of lectures and scientific training dives covering the following subjects: coral reef ecology; Cnidarian taxonomy; survey techniques; and identification of Indo-Pacific coral reef organisms. After successfully completion of SDP, I was responsible for organising volunteers into survey teams, coordinating and conducting data-collection dives, ensuring dive safety and data-collection standards were being maintained, and keeping the survey database current. My other responsibilities included providing head office with fortnightly progress reports and recent survey data, managing the expedition bar, and helping with the general maintenance and upkeep of the expedition base. -

Field ResearcherFoundation For The Protection Of Marine Megafauna Mar 2010 - Jun 2010Tofo, MozambiqueDuring my field period I observed and recorded interactions between swimmers and whale sharks and later quantified these interactions for analysis. I conducted a thorough evaluation of a dataset collected over the previous 3 ½ years and designed a new long-term monitoring strategy for whale shark tourism which has since been adopted in Mozambique.Data collection was conducted in the small coastal town of Tofo in Mozambique aboard a commercial dive vessel. I was responsible for giving pre-trip briefings to clients highlighting the regional protocols associated with interacting with whale sharks. I also gave several of the weekly whale shark lectures at the lodge in which the research station is situated.

I learnt a number of skills during this project including several different methods of elasmobranch capture and both external and internal acoustic tagging techniques.
