Software Development ManagerTasmanian Partnership For Advanced Computing (Tpac) Nov 2008 - Aug 2011Hobart, AustraliaThe Tasmanian Partnership for Advanced Computing (TPAC), University of TasmaniaNovember 2008 - August 2011 (2 years 10 months)I managed a project comprising six sub projects running out of organisations including the Bureau of Meteorology, CSIRO, IMOS, TPAC & Arcitecta. Sub-project leaders at each of the contributing organisations reported to me, and I reported to the steering committee. In addition to managing the project I was lead architect and developer on one of the sub-projects. The project objective was to integrate large marine and climate data sets that are distributed across Australian research institutions, using web services. The outcome was a federated system that allows marine and climate data throughout Australia to be discoverable, searchable and conformable with standard vocabularies, enabling researchers to collect and aggregate data across multiple disciplines.I also managed three smaller projects:• Integration of the TPAC Digital Library with AAF national security standards.• Integration of the TPAC Digital Library with the Australian National Data Service.• South Esk Sensor Web feed into ANDS.My other main accomplishment in this role was attracting funding for the three projects mentioned above. I also contributed to a successful bid for TPAC to host a node of the national cloud computing infrastructure. The project was funded by a federal investment of $150 million for a distributed OpenStack SAAS implementation and supporting storage. I wrote the original proposal for the cloud computing component and helped see the bid through to completion.investment of $150 million for a distributed OpenStack SAAS implementation and supporting storage. Contract Analyst/ProgrammerNational Australia Bank Mar 2006 - Oct 2008Melbourne, AustraliaI worked on two projects during my contract with NAB Capital. My second, and most recent, project involved an application called GMM (Global Message Manager). GMM is a J2EE application, which runs on Wepsphere. Its purpose is to provide a central processing hub for integration with the global SWIFT network. The solution is based on a Misys product called MMM, which can be extended using custom Java classes to implement complex message flows. I was involved in the Java side of the development using such tools as Eclipse, ANT and Junit.Prior to working on GMM, I worked on a project to upgrade Equation, which is another Misys banking application. My role in this project included managing the DB2 database. I also rewrote and upgraded the code for processing the auto-rollover of foreign currency term deposits. -
Technical Lead - Analyst/ProgrammerEds (Commonwealth Bank & Westpac) Aug 2002 - Dec 2005Sydney, AustraliaI worked on three projects as a subcontractor for EDS. The first project was at the institutional banking division of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. The bank's requirements included a straight-through processing system for the settlement of foreign currency exchange trades. My part in this project was to design and develop the interface between a web based system called "ecomm" and Midas (the backend application). In addition to the interface and its associated applications, I wrote the enquiry and maintenance programs on the Midas side for processing the received settlement instructions and cash flows. I also updated the applications for outgoing SWIFT messages. At the completion of the MIDAS project, I moved to the Westpac account where I worked with the middleware team on a number of projects. The largest of these projects involved the implementation of an interface between EDS and Westpac systems. The interface was required for a mortgage system outsourcing agreement between the two companies. I was involved in the design of the integration solution in conjunction with IBM. The implementation included SSL and clusters for high availability and load balancing. The systems integration solution spanned the EDS and Westpac networks. After a short break to focus on my PhD, EDS invited me back work on another project with the Commonwealth Bank. The project involved the implementation of a new asset finance system called ALFA. My primary objective was to oversee the development and deployment of the new system, and to provide technical advice and direction to stakeholders within the business arm of the Commonwealth Bank. I implemented a new change control methodology, which allowed business staff to test and deploy new asset finance agreement types. I was also responsible for system analysis in relation to performance and capacity.
