I am a scientist and educator who focuses on molecular motors. In particular, I study the bacterial flagellar motor which makes nearly all bacteria swim. Currently we seek to understand the origins and evolution of this complex nanomachine and demonstrate applications in synthetic biology. We also build in vitro synthetic droplet networks to find insight from recreating complex biological systems from the bottom up. I have a track record in communicating scientific ideas to both experts and non-experts through radio, television, print and online media, formal teaching and public outreach. I have fenced internationally for many years.
