V/line Strategy and Program, Murray Basin Rail Project – Signalling Project Engineer, Victoria AustraliaI am engaged with V/line Strategy and Program as the client side signalling project engineer. As the project has developed from a D&C delivery with V/line providing assurance, to V/line directly subcontracting design, construct, test and commission services, so the role has changed to support that. I have provided technical advice to the project to allow cost effective solutions to operational requirements in a highly political project environment. I have then developed signalling scopes to deliver those solutions for tender purposes. I have taken a strong leadership role in guiding the design development with the subcontractor, in an environment where the delivery dates and schedule are fluid, with constant scope changes imposed to deliver operational functionality to meet political milestones.

Transport for NSW – Rail Systems Planning, I & S Operational Systems, NSW AustraliaI was engaged with I & S Operational Systems in the Rail Systems Development team to assist with the rail systems planning workload. In this role, I was primarily involved in developing a strategy and implementation roadmap for the application of a traffic management system on the conventionally signalled network to match that to be applied as part of the Advanced Train Control System. This has involved collaboration with stakeholders in both formal and informal settings specifically concerning the TMS, and collaboration with other parts of the Transport cluster concerning interfacing systems and processes. Regular meetings have been arranged for the transfer of knowledge and the communication of progress.

Jan 2014 - Sept 2014: Newcastle Urban Renewal and Transportation, Principal Signalling Engineer, NSW AustraliaThe multi-disciplinary scoping design and definition design are being delivered by URS for TfNSW. Working for URS, I am responsible for delivering the scoping design and definition design for signalling in compressed timescales. This has involved design of a concept signalling layout at scoping design developing into a fully dimensioned proof of concept signalling layout at definition design. The compact nature of the site has called for a very flexible signalling layout to ensure efficient and continuous train movement even under very congested circumstances.As part of the design, full braking calculations for both signals and train stops have been carried out. The layout also required complex nested train stops and timed sections at a number of locations to mitigate the effects of overrun. Aspect sequence has been designed to determine the signal profiles.As the discipline lead for signalling for URS, I have also undertaken peer reviews of other discipline designs to determine compatibility with the signalling design.May 2014 - Nov 2014: URS, Consultant assisting with gaining AEO statusSept 2014 - Dec 2014: Wickham Transport Interchange Tender DesignJan 2015 - July 2016: AECOM, Wickham Transport interchange, Signalling civils design checkerI have been engaged by AECOM to provide guidance during design and to check the signalling elements of the signalling civils design package for the Wickham Transport Interchange project. AECOM are sub-contracted to Aurecon, Laing O'Rourke Australia's designer, to provide a number of design packages.

Jan 2015 - July 2016: Sydney Trains, business process improvement projects, ESI S&CSI assisted Sydney Trains to identify the magnitude and attribute the cause of the large backlog of signalling documentation updating. I wrote new procedures through a collaborative process with major stakeholder involvement. This involved significant research into the existing processes interfacing to the Signalling and Control Systems group to ensure that the new procedures were integrated and workable.

Following my long secondment into the ARTC signaling alliances with Ansaldo STS, I reacquainted myself with the Arup office. As the sole full time occupant of the Arup office in Newcastle, I lead Hunter Valley based projects, interfacing between the design group in Sydney and the UK and the client in Newcastle. I also supported bids in Sydney for multi-disciplinary rail consulting, and managed signaling bids for the Hunter.

Following a trip to Newcastle NSW to scope one of the first complex projects to be delivered by the ARTC signaling alliance, I became the UK based project engineer and prime point of contact for all signaling design related issues throughout the design phase of the projects delivered by Arup in the Hunter Valley. During this period, I also became involved in the operational modelling and business case for the third track between Minimbah and Maitland.I also kept a small portfolio of design for UK based projects during this time also.

Commencing in April 2009, I emigrated to Newcastle NSW from the UK to take up a fulltime role assisting the delivery of ARTC signaling alliance projects. I used my understanding and experience of signaling from an operational and concept design level to help the client shape a number of the more complex projects delivered by ARTC Major Projects in this period. I predominantly concentrated on the multi-track area between Singleton and the Terminals at Newcastle, however I also became involved in projects in other areas that were complex and required capacity and operational modelling.

Starting my railway signaling career with Arup, I was challenged to a vertical learning curve with early exposure to concept designs and feasibility studies. Within my first year at Arup, I had supported detailed design for two level crossing renewals, supported a feasibility study into freight diversionary routes, completed a reference design for the East London Line and commenced ladder logic interlocking design for the GETS VHLC plc based signaling system for the Sheerness Resignalling project in Kent.From this start, I moved onto more of the same, taking an increasing level of responsibility for the design I was producing. Design works were varied from the basic (simple points renewals) to the extremely complex (remodelling of the throats of Edinburgh Waverley Station, a 22 platform station in Scotland)
