About Rae Yan

Before becoming a writer and editor of executive resumes and casual homesteader, I was an Assistant Professor of British Literature from 1830-1900 at the University of Florida from 2018 to 2023. I decided to pursue a more independent career as a writer and part-time farmer to focus more on what I love best: growing, tending, and reading.Academic articles I wrote are published in peer-reviewed academic journals including Nineteenth-Century Contexts; Nineteenth-Century Gender Studies; English Literature in Transition, 1880-1920; and Dickens Studies Annual. I was recognized and awarded by UF for my teaching of a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate courses on Victorian literature, the nineteenth-century British novel, nineteenth-century literature and science studies, Golden Age children's literature, and video game studies. I am very proud of the work produced by the undergraduate and graduate students that I mentored during my time as an academic. **If you are a former student, please reach out! I would be thrilled to hear what you have been doing since we last talked!**I am experienced with giving professional public talks and presentations on subjects as wide-ranging as the study of human tissue in George Eliot’s Middlemarch to the artistic representation of pugs as symbol of empire during the eighteenth century. I am an avid technology enthusiast and invest in improving my audio, content, and video-editing skills.I pursued my PhD in English from the Department of English and Comparative Literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I also received a certificate in digital humanities--the use of digital tools and technology to facilitate research and teaching of humanities subjects. My interests in digital humanities focuses on empathy-centered video games and digital literacy. During my time at UNC-CH, I was a fellow of the Royster Society of Fellows of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for my interdisciplinary work. My dissertation was awarded the Fred and Joan Thomson Award for Outstanding Dissertation Work. I completed my BA at Wellesley College where I majored in both English and Chinese Literature and Culture.
