I’m at my best leading teams that build and rehabilitate communications, technology, training and other nonprofit programs and partnerships to make them bigger, better, more effective ¬‒ whatever is needed. Maybe it’s because I was a middle child in a large family, or that I’m a Virgo, but I relish bringing people together, establishing order out of chaos and making things right.I led an outreach initiative to help the private land conservation community be more welcoming and inclusive, creating videos, case studies, blog posts and magazine articles; facilitating trainings; arranging speaker events and running social media campaigns. And it worked - a third-party assessment of the program after just four years noted a remarkable impact in the way land trust practitioners and their organizations were operating.The strategic communications plan that I created for the Land Trust Alliance is leading to a national initiative. I managed a brand refresh, redesigned the public website and was executive editor of the annual report and award-winning quarterly magazine, Saving Land. I established LTAnet, the first knowledge management and communications web portal for land trusts. I later added an accreditation assessment portal, integrated the Education Team’s online courses into the interface and digitized all the annual conference materials making them universally available. I also revamped the public portal to promote and locate local land trusts.Another IT project I managed was digitizing the entire National Land Trust Census data process, saving the organization thousands of dollars in printing and staff costs, increasing accuracy and response rates, and shortening data collection periods. One last personal note: I have attended and facilitated many diversity, equity and inclusion trainings over the past 25 years. I also attended a dismantling racism training in 2012-2013 that changed my life. As an older White male, I have embraced my responsibility to acknowledge my privilege and work to address systemic injustices at home, at work, and in the community. My entire career, starting with the Peace Corps in Guatemala, has been about connecting people to the benefits of nature, whoever they are and wherever they might live. It’s what I believe in, who I am and what drives me. I am a culturally competent and collaborative director who leads by doing and am known as a transparent, effective team leader who is innovative and enthusiastic, yet steady under pressure.
