The full sourcing of all engine room spares, quotes, shipping, approval, and ordering was also part of the job description. The dry dock period involved a standard 5-year class renewal, major propulsion overhauls and a large-scale AV/IT install, all being extremely valuable to be a part of the team for the planning and execution. I was able to assist and learn from the ETOs, which is a major point of interest for me, and this has furthered my skills, knowledge, and desire to learn more in this subject. Show less

After the launch, I established standardized store-keeping and general/ISM maintenance, which was continuously improved. Handling professional warranty claims and documentation, with further testing of all onboard systems. These were exciting yet demanding responsibilities. After finishing my Cadetship with Foreland Shipping Limited, I was permanently employed. Works involved full takeover of all planned/unplanned maintenance and inventory management on purifiers, boiler, air compressors, STP, firefighting equipment and LSA’s. Along with general watch keeping, a lot was learnt in welding, fabrication and hand skills, all maintenance and duties were carried out by the engineering officers onboard.

A Med and Caribbean Season as a deckhand and two shipyard periods in Ft. Lauderdale and Palma as an assistant engineer. Whilst a deckhand, I developed a good respect for the deck department and exterior upkeep requirements, basic deck maintenance, gel-coat polishing/maintenance and tender driving was developed. For the engineering periods, it was a great introduction to engine room watch keeping, system tracing and general shipyard maintenance and planning, this pushed me into formal education.
