In this role, my primary job is to recruit, interview, and schedule participants for a study investigating the impact of substance use disorders on the brain. I run each participant through cognitive testing and behavioral interviews (including clinical interviews for psychological diagnosis), and maintain contact for scheduling follow-up visits. After participant visits, I score their materials and input data in our study's database.I also spend time organizing and analyzing data for research projects, including academic publications. I maintain contact with various recruitment sites and strategize the best methods for recruiting participants for our study. I write quarterly and yearly progress reports for our funding sources, which include the Department of Defense and the NIH.

As a graduate student, I worked as a GTA for an undergraduate Psychological Statistics course. In this position, I taught a two-hour lab section (~25 students) once a week to introduce statistical concepts and work through examples with students. Motivation and Emotion Research LabPrincipal Investigator: Dr. David GardThe main project of focus for this lab was assessing impairments in motivation and emotion in people with schizophrenia. In this role, I managed a team of 8-10 research assistants (RAs) by assigning project tasks, checking progress regularly, and reporting to the principal investigator with important updates. Other responsibilities included proposing, preparing, and conducting research projects, interviewing potential RA candidates, and training RAs on lab protocol/clinical assessments with participants.

This position was with the Campus Academic Resource Program at SFSU, a student-run tutoring service on campus. In this role, I supervised a team of 10 academic tutors by providing training, assigning workshops and projects, offering feedback and progress updates as needed, and collaborating with other coordinators to make the program more successful and effective. I communicated with faculty to assess their need for tutoring services, in-class workshops, or other academic assistance. We attended meetings with school administration and wrote yearly reports describing and quantifying our activity with students and faculty. The program's goal was always to reach more students and faculty each year.

Cognitive Psychophysiology Research LabPrincipal Investigator: Dr. Mark GeislerThis laboratory utilizes electroencephalography (EEG) and event related potentials (ERP) to study brain activity. The primary concerns investigated in this lab involve quantifying sensations and perceptions electrophysiologically. The project I assisted on used EEG and ERP to study how PTSD can affect a participant’s reaction to context violations when presented with positive and negative images. In this role, I ran participants through the study by reviewing consent forms, administering EEG equipment (placing electrodes on the face and electrode cap on the head), and explaining the study task. I also cleaned and analyzed EEG data as needed.

This role was with the Campus Academic Resource Program at SFSU. I tutored undergraduate and graduate students individually in writing, reading, and study skills across all disciplines. I also developed and facilitated in-class workshops for undergraduate students on academic and professional skills such as APA Citation, The Writing Process, Resume and Cover Letter, Oral Presentations, and many others. I presented dozens of information sessions in classrooms, which are brief presentations that detail CARP’s services and general information, with the intention of encouraging students to schedule tutoring sessions.

Motivation and Emotion Research LabPrincipal Investigator: Dr. David GardIn this position, my primary objective was to identify and contact potential research subjects for our study, including both control and patient populations. I scheduled clinical assessments, patient orientations, and other study visits between selected participants and research assistants. I also spent time training participants on the use of technology and devices for participation in the study. This study recruited people with schizophrenia to use a new phone app to track emotion and social interaction throughout the day. We were testing this app for feasibility to see if participants were easily able to use and understand it, and hopefully benefit from it.

As a sales associate, I assisted customers, restocked items, organized displays and helped order items from our vendors. I was also in charge of the store's cash safe, making cash deposits at the bank and getting change for the registers.
