Richard Park Email and Phone Number
Dr. Richard Park coordinated development of one of the first detailed aquatic ecosystem models in the early 1970s. He applied it to International Biological Program lakes in Norway, Denmark, Scotland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Hungary, and Italy. Many of the formulations in this model have been used in succeeding generations of models all over the world. In the late 1970s he assembled a team to develop one of the first toxic fate models. He combined these models and developed the AQUATOX ecotoxicology model, which was a pioneering effort that represents the fate and effects of nutrients, detritus, and toxic chemicals in a wide variety of aquatic ecosystems. Recently it was used to assess the damages of the Deepwater Horizon oil release on nearshore environments of the Gulf Coast. He also first developed the SLAMM spatially-explicit ecological model in 1985; it is widely used to predict losses of coastal areas to sea-level rise and to identify coastal areas that should be reserved for shoreward migration of wetlands. He has also given congressional testimony on sea-level rise. In 2016 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Society for Ecological Modelling.
