Provides organizational leadership in collaboration with fellow Board members, Executive Director, and Staff. Hawaii Literacy's leaders strive to fulfill the organization's mission of helping people gain knowledge and skills by providing literacy and lifelong learning. As Board President, actively involved in organizational development, governance, policy, financial oversight, legal and operational guidance, and coaching key staff and new board members.

Recruited to Hawaiian Telcom for solutions-driven approach to legal issues, legal background in regulated corporate environment, and collaborative leadership style – all needed qualities for turnaround of telecom utility. Legal and strategic communications advisor to all business units; bankruptcy emergence, brand re-launch, SEC registration and initial public trading of stock, financial reporting, first annual shareholder meeting, TV service launch, workforce realignment, and NASDAQ listing. Leadership role in companywide employee engagement initiative and design thinking rollout. Led strategic planning and execution of all internal and external communication – media interactions, public relations, corporate image, executive communication support, and employee mass communications. Core team member on multiple major, inter-departmental project initiatives successfully executed and on emergency/crisis management team.

Advised executives and numerous departments on legal matters; managed outside counsel; and consulted with external company partners and customers on their concerns. Named President of HECO subsidiary Uluwehiokama Biofuels Corp. (from 2007 inception to departure). Active in HECO community service activities and early renewable energy planning.Primary responsibility for directing defense of claims and lawsuits against company; advising Engineering, Construction & Maintenance, multiple Operations divisions, and Risk Mgmt., among others; served as Legal Officer of Incident Command team during actual crisis management and training; led several internal investigations and core team member on major external investigations; and represented company before state courts and agencies, in mediation, and in various negotiations.

Focused practice on commercial litigation and insurance defense litigation, including defense of matters involving technical issues; also, contracts, employment disputes, injunctive actions, legislation, and client development. Numerous firm committees including hiring, compensation, strategic planning, marketing, and community.

Designer of transportation (commuter rail and highway) projects and construction support. Representative projects include Santa Clara County Light Rail, San Joaquin Hills Toll Road, highway and interchange upgrades.
