Sustainable San Francisco worked with the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to create the nation's first ban on toxic flame retardant chemicals in furniture and infant products. We also worked with then Supervisor London Breed (subsequently Mayor of SF) to ban styrofoam for use in packaging, food containers, and marine products, the most extensive ban in the US.

Founder and Executive Director of the national environmental group Bluewater Network, which was responsible for over dozens of state and federal laws and regulations including the United States’ first-ever law to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles, national regulations to reduce pollution from container ships, oil tankers, and other large vessels, prohibitions on the use of snowmobiles, jet-skis, and all-terrain vehicles in the National Parks system, and an end to the use of flame retardant chemicals in residential furnishings. Wrote opinion pieces on environmental issues for major media outlets such as the New York Times, the L.A. Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Boston Globe, appeared on CNN, MSNBC, CBS, BBC, and was quoted widely in numerous domestic and international media outlets.
