About Ruth Doyle

Sustainable Development | Expert in Behaviour Change, Strategic Design, and Public Engagement | 18+ Years in Consultancy & AcademiaWith 18 years in sustainability and a PhD in Human Geography, I lead M-CO's multidisciplinary Engagement Team on a diversity of projects aimed at fostering transformative change. As a social scientist with expertise in sustainable consumption, behaviour change, and collaborative design, I thrive at the intersection of research, strategy, and impact. Recent projects include working with the EPA on their ‘Stop Food Waste’ campaign, with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council to deliver public engagement activities on active mobility and placemaking projects, and with Waterways Ireland to shape their Climate Action Plan. I have extensive experience working on complex multi-stakeholder projects across the transport, energy, waste, water and food sectors. My approach combines collaborative design, stakeholder engagement and user research techniques to shape policies, programmes, and infrastructure projects that empower communities and foster sustainability. I work closely with MCO’s in-house designers to communicate and visualise complex ideas and insights in simple, meaningful ways to increase understanding and enable action. I have published papers on environmental governance and sustainable consumption and lectured on related topics in Trinity College Dublin and the University of California, Berkeley. In 2018, I established ‘Glasthule and Sandycove Going Green’ bringing together local businesses and residents to build a more sustainable local community.- Behaviour Change: Theory and strategic implementation- Public Engagement: Strategy development, implementation, and evaluation- Co-Design Processes: Cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration- Qualitative Research: Skilled in ethnographic research, focus groups, workshops, and in-depth interviews- Strategic Communications: Expertise in content design, report writing, and science communication- Sustainable Consumption: water, energy, waste, food, travel- Teaching & Lecturing: Experience teaching at university level- Environmental Policy: In-depth understanding and application

Since completing my PhD I have been developing publications, summary documents and media articles on Consensus's research on sustainable consumption. I manage the Consensus project communications and recently re-designed the Consensus website and directed a series of short animations on our research (see: www.consensus.ie). Since January 2014 I have been working on Phase 2 of the Consensus project. This involves collaborating with a number of corporate, public and non-governmental partners to trial social and technical innovations for sustainable household water consumption. These will be evaluated in 'HomeLab' ethnographic research with Irish householders focusing on effective interventions for behaviour change along with identifying commercial and policy spin-off activities. Throughout my postdoctorate I have been involved in undergraduate teaching and lecturing on sustainable development.
  • Trinity College Dublin, Geography Department
    Phd Researcher - Consensus Project
Trinity College Dublin, Geography Department Sep 2009 - Dec 2012
    Dublin, Ireland
My PhD research was within the broad field of social science, focusing on sustainable household consumption (specifically on water and energy). It was part of an all-Ireland, EPA-funded research project (www.consensus.ie). The research adopted a 'participatory backcasting' approach aimed at the collaborative design of future scenarios containing social and technical innovations for more sustainable household consumption. These scenarios were used to develop long-term transition plans containing ideas for education, policy, business and R&D. The research was also used as the basis for an exhibit at the 'Future of Water' exhibition in the Science Gallery Dublin and in the EyeBeam Art & Technology Centre, New York (http://sciencegallery.com/surfacetension/waterwise/)
