United Communications was founded in 1979 by Ryan Collier's grandfather, Joe Collier. In the mid 80s, Ryan's father, Mike Collier, engaged with the company, and they started selling fax machines. For several years United Communications was the only company selling fax machines in all of Washington State. Then, in the late 80’s, phones were added to the company's offerings. Fun Fact: United Communications set up the wiring and sold Microsoft its very first phone system in its original building, then near Kirkland. Funny enough, they wanted to pay in Microsoft stock at the time. Although Ryan's dad declined, he now wishes he had accepted their offer. Eventually underground cabling transformed to low-voltage cabling which United Communications contracts directly and now also sub-contracts this type of work. Ryan Collier, 3rd generation Collier, is now at the helm and enjoying this new opportunity.
