During my time with the Jacobs Institute, I have had the opportunity to aid in the development of new medical devices and help device companies conduct research. The device I have had the most experience with is the IRRAflow catheter created by IRRAS. I helped to pioneer its use as an intrathecal drug delivery device and have been an author on several key papers demonstrating its superiority over traditional ventricular catheters.

As a neurosurgery resident I participate first-hand in the care of critically ill neurosurgical patients, perfecting my medical and surgical skills in the process. Since starting residency I have spearheaded several endeavors to increase student engagement in our department, including streamlining the process for students to get involved with clinical research. As a result, over 100 students have been recruited to assist our department with research. I also value high quality health care for the patients in my hometown and have undertaken projects to improve the outcomes of my fellow Buffalonians. Working with our trauma program at Erie County Medical Center, which treats a large proportion of the underserved population in Buffalo, I have used evidence-based medicine practices to change our external ventricular drain policies for patients with severe traumatic brain injury, modify sedation protocols to reduce hospital length of stay, and develop a wound care protocol for our post-surgical patients to prevent wound complications. During my time at Kaplan I was one of the first teachers certified to teach the revamped 2015 MCAT. As such, I taught at several institutions throughout New York State to cover scheduling gaps for current teachers undergoing training for the new MCAT. During my time with the School of Pharmacy, I investigated the role of the Slick channel in the development of migraines. This sodium-gated potassium channel is expressed widely in the central nervous system, including on neurons which release CGRP, a pro-inflammatory molecule thought to play a role in the development of migraines. We induced common channel mutations into mouse ovary cells in order to measure the effect of the mutations on electrochemical activity of the mutated channels.

During my time with Toshiba I spent time collecting angiography data to assist in the creation of a cardiac phantom, which is a 3D printed model of the human heart. This device can be customized based on unique patient anatomy and allows for physicians to simulate complex procedures prior to performing the intervention on a live patient.

During my time as a teaching assistant for human anatomy I was in charge of running the laboratory sessions in which students practiced identifying the anatomy taught in class on real human specimens. As such, I also needed to hone my own anatomical skills because the dissections were dependent on the teaching assistants. Additionally, I helped organize review sessions before the students exams.

My first job was working at Regal Cinemas selling tickets and concessions. This job provided me with several opportunities to improve my communication and interpersonal skills. Though not related to what I currently do, many of the skills I developed during my time with regal continue to be critical during my interacts with patients on a daily basis.
