Supervised by Dame Professor E.J. Milner-Gulland I used anthropological approaches to study how large organisations make decisions about biodiversity in practice. Through close collaboration with the South African government, I mapped out the social dynamics within their biodiversity net gain, landscape level planning and environmental impact assessment.

I worked on a broad range of topics and learnt about all aspects of conservation in Africa. I worked in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia on a broad range of topics from poaching to community management of fisheries.

In this position I managed all scientific aspects of Frontier including fundraising, publication of scientific papers and staff management. I also played a major trouble-shooting role.

I lived on remote islands and studied the feeding habits of the African Penguin as part of a larger project on the effectiveness of marine protected areas.
