Implements new network operating systems hardware/software and develops medical campus network operating procedures in accordance with Defense Health Agency (DHA) and Department of Defense (DoD) guidelines. Analyzes LAN utilization statistics through data collection and performance measures to ensure the smooth, reliable, and robust operation of LANs. Coordinates LAN installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and reviews, evaluates, and fine-tunes components such as hubs, switches, and routers to achieve peak efficiency within the overall network connectivity. . Recommends and prepares operating policies and procedures for networks, system operations, and product assembly and installation. Provides customer assistance and training for new network systems. Ensures network survivability by developing and maintaining disaster recovery plans. . Performs feasibility studies to develop or modify complex information systems to meet user networks and/or telecommunication requirements. Serves as a network security administrator for a large number of total force users on the Luke AFB MedCOI enclave. Ensures the optimum performance of the MDG firewall. Implements directed technical solutions provided by MDG Information Assurance Officer, DHA, and the DoD as required to maintain the network into compliance with current network and/or operating system security measures. Develops requirements for the acquisition of network hardware, software, and services, and recommends selection and installation of new network systems and network operating software. Analyzes processes and/or problems relative to the design and selection of automated systems pertaining to network. Determines if the facility environment can provide for system requirements and infrastructure is in place to support the system. Coordinates with other Defense Health Agency, base agencies and contractors to ensure compliance standards are met.

The Network Specialist ensures that the LAN/WAN is capable of providing required services bysupporting the network infrastructure through the use of troubleshooting and problem resolution in aproduction environment. Provides daily operational support for LAN/WAN networks, including firewalls.Plans, installs and supports hardware and software upgrades.The Network Specialist is required to resolve technical issues associated with network and routingprotocols at all levels of the OSI model through the use of diagnostics and network administration toolssuch as Hewlett Packard (HP) OpenView, Cisco Works and Tivoli. An understanding of ManagementInformation Blocks (MIB) and MRTG to measure, plan and execute methodologies to ensure highperformance levels and minimum downtime.Responsible for maintaining LAN – WAN barrier systems to prevent unauthorized access to MTFsystems. In order to meet these requirements, the Network Specialist must be familiar with Ciscofirewalls, Cisco, Alcatel, Hewlett-Packard, Nortel and NetScreen VPN devices and IDSs.Uses diagnostic utilities to identify and isolate problems encountered on different mediums and networkprotocols, gather latency statistics and find specific network bottlenecks, evaluate problems andimplement fix actions through device reconfiguration or replacement depending on the circumstances.
