Manage all aspects of the Investment function for the Pentegra group of pension plans and other retirement accounts.Pentegra, a leading provider of pension plan investment and other retirement services, began doing business as the management company responsible for the defined benefit pension plans of the Federal Home Loan Bank system in the 1940's. Today, the firm manages $8 Billion in retirement plan assets for the FHLB and hundreds of the system's privately-owned member institutions as well as other government agencies including the Office of the Comptroller of Currency (OCC). Pentegra is also now a leading provider of pension and retirement plan administrative services and record-keeping, and is a recognized industry leader in multiple-employer plan adminstration.

Responsibilities: Management of the firm's Non-Public and Non-Fixed Income domestic investment portfolio, Private Placements, High Yield, Bank Loans, Equities, Alternative Investments and Real Estate. Major Accomplishments include:Source, evaluate and monitor investments in the Company's Alternative Strategies Portfolio, including relationship management with General Partners investing in Private Equity, Mezzanine Debt, Distressed Debt, Hedge Funds, Emerging Market Investments and Real Estate, growing the portfolio from less than $100mm to over $200mm during the period.Over a three-year per period, produced superior returns that exceeded an internal benchmark of Alternative assets by approximately 400bps per annum

Responsibilities: Management of the firm's credit research staff and investment analysis functions, as well as certain other derivative-related risk controls. Oversee development of the firm's nascent Alternative Strategies initiative, including Private Equity and Real Estate. Major Accomplishments include:Manage department's Relative Value assessment process, and moderate the weekly RV meetings which governed tactical asset allocation. Created the firm's internal 'heat chart' which formalized the RV decision-making process allowing measurement of Value added from tactical allocation callsCreated the firm's template for ISDA Master Agreements and acted as lead negotiator with the firm's swap and derivative counterparties, saving over $100,000 in legal feesDeveloped an internal FHLB-funded 'arbitrage portfolio' producing over $2.5mm of additional profit per annum after all charges (including capital) and a $10mm unrealized profit at the end of 2010

Responsibilities: Directly manage the firm's $5 billion-plus core fixed income investments, with responsibility for day-to-day portfolio management and selection of securities. Manage the staff of Traders, ensuring best execution of trades and proper documentation of all trading activity. Major Accomplishments include:As lead Insurance Industry negotiator for Missouri Legislative Initiative, spearheaded the effort to re-write the investment laws for insurance companies in Missouri - resulting in a bill signed into law by the Governor that allowed a wider class of acceptable investments and reduced compliance costsSuccessfully invested the core US fixed income portfolio resulting in superior performance and approximately $2-$3mm in lowered investment costs for the firm per annum

Direct and oversee third-party asset managers with responsibility for the firm's multi-billion dollar mortality portfolios and international portfolios. Develop relationships with portfolio managers and others to ensure proper security selection and cash management. Act as department liaison to RGA's Mortality business segment's officers and managers. Major Accomplishments:Obtained firm's membership with the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines (FHLB)Lead the transition from a third-party advisor business model to internal management, hiring traders and operations staff and implementing systems and processes that allowed RGA to trade its own account for the first time; AUM approximately $2.5 Billion)

Responsibilities: Management of Investments for the KCL Group of Companies, with overall responsibility for $2.4 Billion of fixed-income and other invested assets in 3 life insurance operating companies, the Group's pension plan, a federally-chartered thrift institution and a charitable foundation. As the senior officer in Investment Division, participate in senior management meetings and strategic initiatives. Other duties include:Successfully directed the Asset/Liability Management (ALM) risk control programs for the insurance companies and Generations Bank, the firm's OTS-regulated thrift institutionConsistently outperformed internal performance benchmarks for both total return and incomeResearched, proposed, and successfully obtained memberships for the firm's 3 main operating subsidiaries in the Federal Home Loan Bank system, resulting in dramatically increased liquidity during periods of financial stress. Created and unwound, at various times, appropriately match-funded asset portfolios which generated additional returns for the firm, including a portfolio that exceeded 60% ROC during one annual period (Old American, 2000)Managed a professional staff of 4 analysts and support associatesManaged & Prepared Departmental operating and capital budgetDirect and Monitor third-party managers in sectors such as High-Yield and Alternative Strategies. Maintained familiarity with investment restrictions imposed by State Insurance Departments, the Office of Thrift Supervision, and ERISA.
