I've spent over a decade doing professional DevOps work. I started out developing software for myself and quickly found myself supporting large scale production environments. It has been my passion. In my career, I've had a chance to work with what I would consider as the best teams and people in the industry and pride myself on the accomplishments I have made with them.In a typical year, I can find myself: - Developing, debugging or fixing code, mostly backend or infrastructure related. - R&D / Prototyping - Architecting software and infrastructure to scale and meet the needs of the company - Working on requirements and implementations with outside vendors - Helping the people around me achieve success - Learning the next big moves in technologies - and more...I'm an engineer at heart.
Listed skills include Scalability, Perl, Linux, Apache, and 13 others.

At Shazam, I filled one of the key roles in helping to re-tool and scale the infrastructure and application stack(s) that power the mobile application. When I first started at Shazam, I walked into an environment that had grown for years by throwing hardware at the problem. Our data center was almost full, hardware took months to provision. The application stack was failing and software problems were difficult to isolate and debug. Managing scale was a huge issue, and in a lot of cases, scaling was too.I quickly directed the company towards the use of AWS to combat data center constraints. The solution was not to just plug into AWS, but create flexibility in our infrastructure to avoid vendor lock issues and scale immediately. I pushed for RHEL as our standard distribution, implemented configuration management using puppet and providing more visibility with nagios and graphite.I helped architect, build, debug, deploy and manage a lot of the critical software that powers Shazam today. Software that was designed to take large spikes of traffic for major TV events such as the NFL Super Bowl where millions of users are directed to use our service. Opportunities that would not have been possible technically without the R&D work that was done prior by myself and other engineers before scaling was a concern. I utilized Apache, PHP, C/C++, Apache, NGinx, Redis, CUDA, Hadoop, and more…Working with R&D teams in Shazam. The infrastructure we have emerged into is nothing compared to the infrastructure I started with. Today we handle requests in the tens of milliseconds, before it was in the seconds. When I started, Shazam was only doing music. Since then, the music catalog has more than quadrupled. Shazam has expanded beyond just music and into TV, Advertisements, Radio and Live Events. All made possible by the contributions of myself and other colleagues.
