This initiative, currently funded by the James Tudor Foundation, exploits the University of Nottingham’s international reputation in MR Physics, clinical excellence in childhood neurodevelopmental disorders and developmental and computational neuroscience, to establish an interdisciplinary research programme that brings innovation in brain imaging, brain image analysis, and computational modelling to the problem of understanding of brain development in health and disease. The NCNI is led by Professor Stephen R. Jackson (Brain and Body Centre, School of Psychology) and Professor Penny Gowland (Sir Peter Mansfield Magnetic Resonance Centre, School of Physics and Astronomy) and involves the active participation of a multidisciplinary group of clinical and basic scientists from the Universities of Nottingham; London, UCL, KCL; Newcastle; and Birmingham; Nottingham University Hospitals Trust; Great Ormond Street Hospital; St. Georges Hospital; Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust; and, Evelina Children’s Hospital London. The NCNI is supported by the University of Nottingham Development Campaign’ and by the UK Charities Tourettes Action, OCD-UK and the James Tudor Foundation. A key objective of the NCNI is to develop cross-sectional and longitudinal multimodal MRI datasets of brain development from infancy to early adulthood in typically developing individuals and individuals presenting with common neurodevelopmental disorders. These datasets from typically developing individuals will provide a quantitative reference against which brain image data from individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., Tourette syndrome, ADHD, OCD, etc.) may be compared, and will provide the source data for bioinformatics and computational modelling approaches to brain development.
