After sailing world-wide in the Merchant Navy, 18 years as Chief Engineer, I gained my first position in yachting in July 2008 as Chief Engineer of the 72m MY Kogo. Kogo is a diesel-electric yacht with two ABB Azipod propeller drives supplied by 2 x Caterpillar and 2 x MTU generators. The azipods, in tandem with a Brunvoll bow thruster, allow dynamic positioning through a Kongsberg DP system.In charge of:Operation and maintenance of all machinery.Maintenance of all guest & crew accommodation.Spare part ordering and inventory.Fuel and lubricants ordering and inventory.Preparing shipyard work lists & docking specs.Leading a team of 4 men.

Before joining MY Kogo I worked 10 years for Maersk Line on large, modern, sophisticated container vessels with MAN-B&W and Wartsila-Sulzer main engines with outputs up to 68,640kW (93,360bhp). As Chief Engineer in 2003 and again in 2006 I stood by Panamax container ship new-builds at shipyards in Korea and Germany, oversaw the sea trials and sailed both vessels on their maiden voyages. Operating & maintaining Panamax container vessels to company standards and the requirements of international legislation. In charge of: The operation & maintenance of all machinery and the structure of the vessel. Ordering of fuel and lubricants & stock control.Ordering of spare parts and stock control.Performing Class surveys of machinery & tanks.Leading a team of 7 men.

Chief Engineer on 9,000dwt Multi-Purpose Cargo/Container vessels with 300t heavy lift capacity from 2 x 150t Hydralift cranes. The main propulsion was provided by a Wartsila 46 medium speed diesel engine.Responsible for: The operation & maintenance of all machinery and the structure of the vessel. Ordering of fuel and lubricants & stock control. Ordering of spare parts & stores and stock control. Performing Class surveys of machinery & tanks. Leading a team of 3 men.

I was the 3rd Engineer Officer in charge of the entire engine room watch on board the 700 passenger vessel M.V. Island Princess; supervising 4 x Fiat main engines driving two controllable pitch propellers and 4 x Fiat diesel alternators, 2 x oil fired boilers and 2 x exhaust gas boilers. Leading a watch of 2 Engineers and 1 Motorman.

I was rotational Chief Engineer on board the 18,000dwt Heavy Lift, Tween Deck General Cargo Ships MV Merchant Premier and MV Merchant Principal. Cargo handling was provided by Clarke Chapman Speerdcranes (AC/DC Ward Leonard drives), 1 x 100t and 8 x 25t. The main propulsion was provided by a Sulzer 6RND76 2 stroke diesel engine.Responsible for: The operation & maintenance of all machinery and the structure of the vessel. Ordering of fuel and lubricants & stock control. Ordering of spare parts & stores and stock control. Performing Class surveys of machinery & tanks. Leading a team of 9 men.

I was Chief Engineer on two geared reefer containers ships; MV Strider Isis and MV Strider Juno. The main propulsion was provided by a MAN V16 medium speed diesel engine.Responsible for: The operation & maintenance of all machinery and the structure of the vessel. Ordering of fuel and lubricants & stock control. Ordering of spare parts & stores and stock control. Performing Class surveys of machinery & tanks. Leading a team of 9 men.

I was 2nd Engineer on the geared reefer container ship MV Puerto Cortes, responsible to the Chief Engineer for the daily operation and maintenance of the engine room and assisting the Electrician with the maintenance of the two gantry cranes. The main propulsion was provided by two V18 Pielstick PC2 directly reversible medium speed diesel engines. Leading a team of 4 engineers, 2 fitters and 2 motormen. Two months into my 4 months contract V-Ships took over the management of the ship and I was transferred to MV Strider Isis and promoted to Chief Engineer.

I was 2nd Engineer on two vessels; the 28,000dwt geared bulk carrier MV Lantau Trader and the feeder container ship MV City of Plymouth. The main propulsion on Lantau Tarder was provided by a Sulzer 6RND76 slow speed diesel engine and on City of Plymouth by a Doxford 58JS3 Seahorse 2 stroke engine.Responsible to the Chief Engineer for the daily operation and maintenance of the engine room, cargo cranes and other deck machinery. On Lantau Trader I was in charge of a team 4 Engineers, 2 Fitters and 2 Motormen. On City of Plymouth I was one of 3 Engineers; myself and the 3rd Engineer were Duty Engineer in charge of the entire engine room on alternate days.

I was the 3rd Engineer Officer in charge of the entire engine room watch onboard the passenger vessel M.V. Orient Express. The main machinery consisted of 4 x V12 Pielstick main engines driving two controllable pitch propellers. The auxiliary machinery was 4 x Wartsila diesel alternators and 9 x Alfa-Laval purifiers.For a 10 week period I was 2nd Engineer Officer (Passenger Service Engineer) in charge of the operation and maintenance of all of the passenger services, including HVAC, vacuum sewage system, reverse osmosis fresh water production, cabin and public room repairs, galley, laundry, elevators and the hotel electrical installation. I had a staff 4 engineers to assist me.

In my time as 4/E at Eastern Bulkers Ltd I completed five contracts on handy size, geared bulk carriers in the size range 22,000dwt - 26,000dwt. As 4/E I was responsible for; air compressor maintenance, purifier maintenance, loading the bunkers under the supervision of the Chief Engineer and being Duty Engineer in charge of the entire engine room watch for one UMS duty day in three. The main propulsion machinery was B&W, MAN and Sulzer slow speed 2 stroke engines and Stork-Werkspoor TM410 medium speed engines.

Phase 2 of my Engineer Officer Cadetship; two voyages learning the job of the Assistant Engine Room Watch Keeper, first onboard the 110,000dwt steam turbine powered crude oil tanker SS Esso Aberdeen and then on the steam turbine powered 253,000dwt VLCC SS Esso Demetia.
