At EZLynx, I am part of a relatively small but very diverse team of in-house developers who are constantly iterating on our product and delivering enhancements and bug fixes using an agile project management style. I am allocated to projects, tasks, or aspects of the overall and continuing mission based on business need, necessary technical proficiency, soft skills, and personal career goals. Team members a usually grouped together based on complementary skills so the strengths and weaknesses of individuals can be maximized, and management takes into account each developer's style and demeanor. I have worked on projects that required proficiency in almost every technology, framework, or platform in the Microsoft stack, including C#, the .NET Framework, ASP.NET MVC and Web Forms, ASP.NET Web API, XML Web Services, WCF, Windows Forms, WPF, Razor Views, jQuery, jQuery Templates, Angular, HTML, JavaScript, SQL Server, and Apache Solr. But this list will continue to evolve as technologies and libraries are recommended for problems they are suited to solve, including cloud technologies, like Windows Azure and Amazon's cloud platform.

I returned to Ristken to evangelize Agile process and provide leadership in a six-month initiative to modernize our architecture into a service-oriented design using the latest version of the .NET framework, unit-testing, and open-source components where applicable. I spent time with the project managers and team leads to show how to create user stories, estimate tasks, perform code reviews, and moderate meetings. I worked with the Director of Architecture to create an acceptable application architecture prototype. I demonstrated a new, working security framework with secure password storage, and how nHibernate could free the team from having to maintain the legacy data access layer.

I worked in a cohesive team where agile methods (user stories, iterations, spikes, and retrospectives) were used to continue to evolve the world-class Enterprise Cloud product by performing new development and resolving existing defects. I participated in the scoring of stories, estimation of tasks, and retrospectives after completing iterations in order to improve our process as a team. All work was reviewed by a peer or lead. We also practiced continuous build and continuous deployment.I was responsible for every tier of the product: I worked with the back-end SQL database, middle-tier application services, and the customer-facing website. This included work in C#, SQL, WCF, ASP.NET, jQuery, AJAX, and JavaScript. I received a commendation from my team lead for how quickly I became effective. After just two weeks, I was given the same point-multiplier (a metric used to make up for the difference in experience among team members during the planning phase) as a developer with one year of tenure.Not including the database and stored procedures, there were more than 500,000 lines of code across 50 C# assemblies, seven ASP.NET websites, a dozen WCF services, and two customer-facing APIs.

As part of the MenuPro product team, I resolved defects and developed enhancements to the product. I found that one of the tasks I did frequently was updating the code that handled mapping a “deal” from third-parties into the format used by MenuPro. I came up with a design where we could use the database to drive the mappings so we wouldn’t have to deploy the product whenever the third parties changed their format, or we wanted to get data from a new partner. I sold this idea to my manager, calling it the Mapping and Integration Service, and worked directly with the Lead Architect to complete the design for the services (using C#, the .NET Framework 3.5, and WCF) and a UI to make changes to the maps. Though the service was meant for the specific task of assisting in pulling “deals” from any one of our third-party data partners, the design was found to be flexible enough that it was soon adopted by other developers for products that I was not involved in. After a while, the service was being used by developers all over the company.With the mapping service handling much of the work I had been doing, I was freed up to do new development on the next version of MenuPro, using ASP.NET MVC 3 and jQuery/jQuery UI.

Little Rock, Arkansas Area

As part of the Strategic Fuel Development team, I wrote complex queries for reporting and used SQL Server Reporting Services to give them a face, and developed several Windows Forms applications in C# to assist our analysts in negotiating contracts, handling the logistics and transportation, and pricing the fuel sold at the company’s 1,200+ retail locations.I worked directly with the analysts to gather requirements, and then developed the applications or reports in an iterative fashion, demoing early and often. For every project, I wrote a user guide and a maintenance guide to assist future users and developers.I created data entry tools, and automation tools for importing data from spreadsheets, third-parties, or even legacy systems that used flat-files. I created an application that enabled the Transportation team to take advantage of movements of the market price of gasoline. A report by the team estimated an ROI of $5 million per year from then on, which increased as more stores opened.I designed and developed a report which forecasted the amount of fuel needed by individual stores and compared it against the amount of fuel in the ground at those stores. After release, the analysts used it to free up $3 million worth of fuel. I developed a report for the Fuel Supply team, enabling them to determine which of their contracts had the best value, lowering costs by 10% in the first year.The Pricing team had been using a legacy application that had a reputation for poor performance, especially when estimating the amount of margin each store had. I redesigned the process, taking it from a 22 minutes run-time to 5-10 seconds. Then I developed a new client that used multi-threading to dramatically improve the user experience. The company cut the Pricing team in half, due to these improvements, freeing up workers for other cost-saving and revenue-producing tasks.

Greater Grand Rapids, Michigan Area

As a development consultant, I was part of a small team developing a “world editor” for a video game engine. My first project involved a system that took an arbitrary entity and generated controls and a layout for editing the properties of that entity. Next, I had to teach myself the mathematics behind simulating light (“Global Illumination”) in order to create a “lightmap” rendering engine using a technique called “photon mapping”. Finally, I made some tweaks to the Direct3D code that rendered the “world” to eliminate what was referred to as “fixed-function” calls.
