Senior Principal Software Engineer
Designed and developed a port of an existing ASP web application into C# ASP.NET. Converted VBScript ASP pages into C# ASP.NET web forms. Moved ADO database calls out of the ASP code into an ASP.NET web service layer encapsulating the business rules and data access logic. Created a common web infrastructure facilitating code reuse of C# routines, web controls, XSL, and JavaScript libraries.Used factory design pattern to isolate data access plug-ins for different data sources. Implemented rich web services infrastructure for token based SOAP authentication, request/response logging, auditing, and performance monitoring.Designed and implemented an enterprise thin client version of the C++ NetWitness 5.0 desktop client. Replicated all existing application functionality with minimal differences in user experience in a minimal timeframe. The presentation tier was implemented in C# ASP.NET, CSS, and JavaScript. The data access tier was implemented in ASP.NET Web Services. The Web Services layer used a C# API library that wrapped existing C++ legacy API code for data access.
Chief Software Architect
netDecide was a leader in financial planning software with some of the largest financial compaines in the country. Its wealth management system was a web based N-tiered architecture.Designed and developed infrastructure for new BookView product. Product utilized Java, XSL, XML, HTC, and JavaScript to provide a rich user experience. BookView encapsulates all other applications to provide a single access point for the WMS product suite. Provided new menu and navigation scheme as well as enabling seamless behind the scenes integration for running existing web applications hosted inside BookView. Redesigned the Dashboard collaboration/workflow web application and integrated it into BookView to allow non-certified planners to request financial plans from those qualified. Redesign allowed better data entry, data sharing, code and logic sharing from other applications, and improved workflow by making the workflow customizable per customer. The workflow provided the ability to notify the parties involved as the plan passed through stages (accepted, rejected, supervisor signoff, …).Implemented a new code organization scheme using SourceSafe and Eclipse. The code tree allowed the company to write one set of code shared by all applications to avoid duplicate code and enforce consistent business logic. Also eliminated the need to use SourceSafe sharing of common files which was error prone and cumbersome to maintain.Leveraged the new code organization to redesign existing code into reusable web ‘components’ that allowed code to be shared for web controls, account/plan/client management, as well as numerous common dialogs for collection of user information.Developed a scheme to share one CSS for all applications and all customer brands while still being able to customize the application’s look and feel for each customer. Process used XML and XSL.
Senior Architect
Designed and developed a Java J2EE Servlet based web tier infrastructure to communicate with a SOAP based middleware. The Core infrastructure dealt with session management, modified WSDL to talk to the SOAP middleware, user login and security, consolidating base logic into extensible classes, abstracting the request context from the business logic, and making the system configurable for our clients so custom development would not be necessary.Implemented an infrastructure for a thin client version of company’s fat OCX based client. The solution involved an XSL solution using client and server-side transformations served by J2EE Servlets to transform the middleware’s XML data into web pages. Developed the XSL template structure that allowed common page look and feel to be used by page developers so changes to infrastructure and look and feel could be made quickly without modifying each page. Developed XSL templates to provide developers with common routines as well as abstraction wrappers for the applications web controls. Rearchitected middleware so that the business logic could be abstracted from the different levels of security/access a user of the application can have.Extended the middleware infrastructure so that a request for data can be configured to retrieve the data from many different sources since each customer has its own back office data requirements. It can also gather data from multiple sources in one request. Project Lead of 5-man team for a companion product of AdvisorDecide that allowed collaboration of non-qualified financial planners to request plans from the planning department using AdvisorDecide. Used a thin client with server-side XSL transforming the middleware’s XML on a J2EE Servlet tier to collect client data, query for back office data, and ship the plan request to the planning department. Also allowed the requestor to reject/accept the generated plan and view the completed reports.
Project Lead
Expanded the layered architecture in version 1.5 to include 3 abstraction layers. The first layer was responsible for caching both XML and native types, if configured, relieving the business logic from needing to know whether the data was cached. The second layer was responsible for shaping data from a data source specific format into the requested format by the business logic (XML or native). This allowed the business logic to work with a common data format even though the data might come from different data sources. The third layer was responsible for retrieving the data for any number of data sources (databases, COM objects). The data shaping and data access abstractions allowed the system to work with different data sources without modifying business logic.Used the 3 abstraction layers to create the InfoEngine which allowed the middleware to configure the data source definition at deploy time needed for a given customer.Used the Session DOM to create a contract between the DecisionServer and clients that consumed its data. The Session DOM was an XML document used during design time to define API output. This allowed thin clients to develop the UI with XSL before the middleware was implemented.Converted the SOAP listener from an ASP based solution into an IIS ISAPI extension.
Technical Lead
Technical lead of a five-person team on a new major release of middleware that took a MTS based DCOM solution and web-enabled the business services by replacing DCOM with SOAP/HTTP. The technical lead is responsible for technical leadership, senior development, prioritizing and allocating resources to tasks, meeting deadlines, implementing architecture design, and leading in architecture design meetings.Developed a mechanism using COM to allow our product to provide a base set of functionalities and allow custom functionality for each client by simply registering a different DLL.Rearchitected a flat COM code infrastructure into a hierarchical infrastructure. By introducing a logical hierarchy of dependencies, we were able to isolate the data access code in one centralized place and isolate the business logic from both data access and the API layer (COM) to provide system compartmental abstraction. This allowed us to use all the features of C++ (inheritance, virtual functions, exception handling) while providing all the advantages of COM/MTS (object pooling, dynamic discovery).Replaced DCOM with SOAP. This was done in two stages. The first stage involved redefining the server-side components so that the input and output was XML data instead of native types. The second stage involved writing a proxy that would reside on the client-side so that the client could talk in native types while the proxy converted the native types into XML, communicated with the server, and converted the XML response back into native types.Developed a SOAP server using IIS that would listen for SOAP requests and dispatch the request to the appropriate MTS component. This combined with the XML middleware architecture allowed the middleware services to become available to any client that can talk HTTP, unlike DCOM, which requires a NT client.Replaced the retrieval/storage of reports by the client from a LAN solution to a HTTP SOAP request.
Senior Developer / Network Administrator
Senior developer on a version 1.0 customer relationship management application in the financial industry sector for a startup software product company. Worked primarily on the ATL COM middleware that used MTS and DCOM to provide business services for the client application. The middleware accessed SQL Server and Sybase databases. Duties included configuration management of server-side projects and build process, component interface design and implementation, reducing the duplication of server code, documented component interaction and interface design using Visio.Developed proof of concept asynchronous application using MSMQ that would receive a request and asynchronously convert a Microsoft Word document into Acrobat Reader PDF format. Application included a client-side component that would allow a programmer to send a request to the server and a server-side NT Service that would monitor the MSMQ queue and process all incoming requests.Windows NT System administrator in a small (~15-25) office setting. Responsibilities included building workstations, trouble shooting networking problems, purchasing workstation, and networking hardware/software, performing disaster recovery of email ad database machines.Developed server hardware requirements plan for transitioning from small office using only workstations as servers to rack mounted Compaq 5500/7600 servers, firewall, router, T1, and remote access strategies.
