About Tyler Baur, Ph.D.

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee with a Ph.D. in Mathematics with a Statistics Concentration.I am a creator and a builder. I love making things and feel an immense satisfaction creating things from nothing. That's why I enjoy software engineering so much. I love all things technology and programming related. I'm always trying to increase my productivity by trying new tools and methodologies. I was using the mouse too much, so I switched to Neovim and use Vim keybindings everywhere I can. I love learning. I learn as much as I can, whenever I can. I am always joking about how I am a font of useless knowledge and while that is somewhat true, I am also well-versed in many subjects. It wasn't until I was most of the way through my doctorate that I found that I also love programming. When I was younger, I dabbled in programming here and there, but never really fell in love with it, it was just something I found interesting. I used the R programming language ever since my Undergrad days, but it was just a tool that I used, it wasn't a passion. I kept using R and Matlab. It wasn't until I was asked by a relative to create a program that processed a bunch of images and upload to a photo sharing site. Since I had a family and research, I couldn't spend too much time on the program and I heard how Python was fairly easy to get into. I was able to write the program within a couple of weeks. That was the moment I fell in love with programming. I have been programming ever since. I wanted to learn a compiled language, so I learned Rust for a project that would have been fine in Python, but would have taken over 3 times as long. I've found that Rust's ownership and borrowing to be quite a refreshing change. Recently, I've started learning the Go programming language.In my free time, I love woodworking, growing hot peppers, gardening and spending quality time with my family.
