Siobhan Franklin (@Frank Impact) and I are supporting Norad to synthesize cutting-edge knowledge from research literature, practical experience as well as empirical evidence about effective ways of designing ODA to engage with and work with the private sector to advance progress towards the SDGs, including use of ODA to trigger significant private resources for developing countries. The purpose is to make Norwegian ODA more effective in this area.

The Work and Opportunities for Women (WOW) programme, funded by DFID, has the objective of improving women's access to improved economic opportunities through business interventions in supply chains. The programme aims to enhance the economic empowerment of 300,000 women working in global value chains through partnerships with business. I am responsible for developing new business partnerships worldwide but with a particular focus on new partnerships in Africa.

Evaluating the Enhancing Livelihood Fund (ELF), a partnership between Oxfam, Unilever and the Ford Foundation. ELF is an innovative model to address livelihood issues of smallholder farmers in Unilever’s supply chain. ELF provides financial and technical support for partners (mostly suppliers) in Unilever’s supply chains to increase their social impact in sourcing from smallholders. ​ELF aims to reduce risks for smallholders, support women and improve conditions for workers within Unilever supply chains . ​ELF worked across multiple commodities, value chains, and countries including gherkins in India, cocoa in Côte d’Ivoire and ylang ylang in the Comoros.

This was a very enjoyable piece of work as part of a team undertaking a review of some of Musika's markets. Musika is a donor supported Zambian non-profit company which stimulates private investment in the agricultural market, with a particular focus on the smallholder and emerging farmer sectors. Provided strategic oversight to a Frank Impact team, and conducted a review of Musika’s work in the cassava, livestock and horticulture markets, and carried out a market-systems analysis to inform a possible three-year follow on programme plan across the 4 thematic areas at the heart of its strategy

International Technical Director for the Business Innovation Facility (BIF) which ended in March 2020. The International Technical Director role comprised three different components, as follows:Technical Lead and Market-systems Advisor, Myanmar: The BIF Country Window (2013-19) worked to address constraints in focus markets in Myanmar (and also in Nigeria and Malawi) using the ‘Market Systems Development’ approach. Provided technical direction to the in-country team in Myanmar as the senior adviser in BIF. Led the market scoping analysis which included researching around 20 different markets in Myanmar, including prawns, tea, mango and eel; and reviewed and edited all technical documents, including market-strategies and log frames.Technical Lead, Company Window: The Company Window (2015 – 2019) also applied the market systems approach but instead of starting with a focus country, the entry point was via companies that were innovating within a specific market. Conducted and directed the analysis of markets, such as the high value fruits and health markets in Kenya. Researched and wrote a strategy for hygiene products in Pakistan which has led to an innovative product distribution model being launched by 5 companies. The University of Michigan has developed a teaching case study on this project which will be available for business students around the world.Technical Lead, Business Partnerships Fund: The Business Partnerships Fund (2017 – 2019) provided grant funding for ten projects led by multinational companies to pilot new, inclusive business models in a range of countries. Provided day to day contact for 6 multi-national companies that received grants from BIF for the Business Partnerships Fund. Led a research project working with 5 companies and network organisations which investigated some of the internal constraints that prevent large companies from scaling and replicating successful inclusive business initiatives.

This is independent Mid-Term Review (MTR) of BCtA to provide its Donor Steering Board and the BCtA team with an opportunity for joint reflection about the programme’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as lessons that can be incorporated into future planning and implementation. The final report will be delivered the beginning of November.

Reviewed the way that the Urban Partnerships for Poverty Reduction (UPPR) programme in Bangladesh has supported communities to develop relationships with other projects or organizations through cross-sector partnerships.

June 2008 – present IBLF/TPI AssociateI have been commissioned to do various pieces of work for the International Business Leaders Forum as an Associate of The Partnering Initiative. The Partnering Initiative is a global programme of the International Business Leaders, in association with the University of Cambridge Programme for Industry. Activities include:- Tutoring a Cohort of the Partnership Brokers Accreditation Scheme.- Writing case examples for, and designing, the publication ‘Under the Spotlight: building a better of understanding of global business-NGO partnerships’ that was released as a work in progress at the IBLF Summer Event on 2nd July 2008.- Project Manager for the World Vision Cross Sector Partnering project.
