Hi 👋 I'm Tom,I'm a software developer from Aotearoa, New Zealand. More than anything I love to solve problems. I strive for 𝒄𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒏, 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒄𝒐𝒅𝒆 and I believe that an intuitive & elegant methodology is the first step towards this. Attention to detail and customer satisfaction are also extremely important to me and are core drivers of my personal sense of fulfilment. I have 7+ years solving a vast range of challenging & complex problems across physics, mathematics, computer science, research and commercial applications. The one conclusion I can draw from all of this experience is that 𝒄𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 & 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 is an essential component of all the best solutions. Oh, and also that rubber duck debugging is possibly the most powerful tool available to programmers, alongside a killer playlist. 🎧🎵𝐌𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲:When I was a kid I wanted to be an inventor – just like Leonardo Da Vinci. As it turns out, that curiosity and desire to solve problems was the perfect basis for the study of physics and computer science. I thoroughly enjoyed my degree, receiving 2 academic awards, spending a semester abroad at the University of Toronto, and completing an honours thesis on the fabrication of optical nanofibres for use in resonant optics research. I also kept up a busy extra curricular schedule playing music, sport, enjoying the outdoors & exploring photography and other arts. I've always had a broad range of interests, and maintaining them all as best as I can has been vital to me finding balance, growth and fulfilment.I have worked primarily on highly specialised desktop applications in the field of computer vision in both an industrial robotics setting and in sports broadcasting. The latter has involved extensive work with computer graphics and rendering pipelines. I have also worked on R&D projects and developed a slightly obsessive passion for optimising UX/UI. Collecting, processing and using data to drive outcomes has become my speciality, using tools such as machine learning, statistical methods, databases & APIs.I am lucky to say that all of my work so far has consisted of problems that I find interesting and that get me excited. And I wouldn't have it any other way, because looking after my mindset and prioritising my own well-being is what has allowed me to consistently deliver my very best work.
