  • Maya Culpa, Llc
    Owner / Software Engineer
Maya Culpa, Llc May 2012 - Nov 2024
    Columbus, Ohio Metropolitan Area
The Gamma Project (2012 - 2023)Initiated in 2012 with the aim of automatically generating enterprise architecture models from source documents. Began as a .NET desktop application and then evolved into a Python-based platform. Initially used GATE for text analysis, data tagging, and alignment to predefined metamodels like BPMN, TOGAF, FEAF, and UML. The system could identify key elements & relationships in source documents and translate between typological frameworks. In 2017, we introduced NLP capabilities, starting with NLTK before switching to Spacy and later integrating AllenNLP and GenSim. Core NLP functionalities include named entity recognition (NER), topic modeling and semantic role labeling. Designed to accommodate a wide variety diversity of document formats and intelligent table processing. Models could be exported to leading enterprise architecture tools like Avolution’s Abacus, Sparx EA, and Archi. The Hydroponic Automation Platform Initiative (HAPI). An open-source project that began in my basement and later moved to The Columbus Idea Foundry, the world's largest maker space at the time. I built multiple hydroponic systems, releasing automation software initially for Arduino and later adding Raspberry Pi support. The project garnered community interest and partnerships, leading to public classes, State fair demonstrations, and academic presentations. We even ventured into KickStarter and launched two commercial offshoots—Tiny Acres for microgreen and herb production, and Hermetica Bioconversions focused on waste bioconversion. The project eventually wound down due to other commitments. Several years later, the HAPI experience informed a paper I wrote for a Mars Society contest in 2021. The challenge was to design a Martian colony for one million people, and my proposal drew heavily on lessons learned from the hydroponic and bioconversion technologies developed during the HAPI project.
  • Oso.Earth
    Cto, Co-Founder
    Oso.Earth Oct 2022 - Aug 2023
    Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
As the Chief Technology Officer at Oso.earth (formerly ELTC.Earth), I wore multiple hats to lead our tech initiatives while aligning them with the company's mission to combat climate change. My efforts ranged from technical implementations to strategic vision. I established the backbone of our communication and analytics by setting up a Mattermost (an open-source Slack clone) server and Grafana dashboards. Additionally, I oversaw Linux system management on DigitalOcean and implemented LimeSurvey to conduct market assessments. These foundational pieces were pivotal in scaling our capabilities and facilitating data-driven decisions. My role extended beyond infrastructure; it encompassed innovation and team leadership. I managed a team of technical interns, guiding them through various projects aimed at simplifying climate action. This led to the ideation and prototype development of a novel app, constructed using BabylonJS, HTML, CSS on the frontend, and Python/Flask on the backend. To augment our existing services, I also designed, wrote and deployed NLP microservices, leveraging Spacy and GenSim for named entity recognition and topic modeling. These were subsequently integrated with our Mattermost server. Throughout my tenure, I actively participated in a rebranding effort, crafted job listings, and networked with potential partners to position Oso.earth at the forefront of climate action solutions.
  • Netjets

Wrote code and support software systems.
  • Northwest Metals
    Vice President Operations
    Northwest Metals May 2005 - Jul 2006
    Okolona, Ohio
In just a year, I helped the owner scale up his scrap metal company, Northwest Metals, by establishing and managing HR processes and health insurance for over 30 employees. Recognizing the potential value in scrapped industrial equipment like robotics and control systems, I spearheaded a reselling operation. I recruited tech-savvy local high schoolers to clean, research, and list these products on eBay. With new operational roles in place, we saw revenue skyrocket from a weekly average of $250 to over $10,000 at a 25% profit margin within 11 months. Despite the challenging and sometimes hazardous work environment, which kept me away from home for about four days a week, I fulfilled my one-year commitment before exiting the company.Successfully completed 4-day training course in asbestos abatement.
  • Koan Corporation
    Founder
    Koan Corporation Jan 2002 - May 2005
    Columbus, Ohio Metropolitan Area
In 2000, captivated by a Discover magazine article on parallel algorithms in FPGA hardware, I reached out to the CEO of Star Bridge Systems to learn more about their "Hypercomputing" technology. This led me to found Koan Corporation in 2002 (originally name Progress Forge), a company aimed at providing specialized training for Star Bridge’s hypercomputing tech. We conducted training sessions at various esteemed institutions, including the Ohio Supercomputing Center and Florida State University, attended by engineers from NASA, Lockheed, and other notable organizations. Capitalizing on our expertise, Koan secured contracts for technical operations with the Ohio Supercomputing Center and design work for the Air Force Research Laboratories, gaining both steady revenue and a foothold in a Columbus startup incubator. Unfortunately, the promise of hypercomputing waned due to issues like memory bandwidth constraints and the rise of GPUs as hardware-based application accelerators.
