About Warren Smith
• Structural analysis expert with over 20 years of experience that includes detailed knowledge of the finite element method (FEM) and classical closed-form solutions. Components and assemblies analyzed include both metallic and composite materials. As a contractor and federal employee, this expertise has been applied to structures and systems for GSFC, NRL DOE, and the US Navy.• Provided oversight and independent evaluation and assessment of high-visibility projects and programs across several US naval platforms (submarines, surface ships, and aircraft carriers). Assessments helped convert associated strategic goals into policies and requirements that judiciously allocated resources and increased the availability and material condition of the fleet.• Systems engineering expertise in integrating complex technical disciplines such as structures, signatures, and materials into advanced ship and spacecraft designs. Demonstrated proficiency in risk assessment and developing strategic plans required to advance marine and aerospace technologies.• Demonstrated exceptional communication skills through leading technical discussions, preparing detailed reports, and presenting findings to high-level stakeholders. Authored and reviewed critical documentation such as stress reports, statements of work (SOWs), non-conformances, and risk mitigation plans, effectively influencing decisions in design, system safety, and program management. Regularly briefed senior leaders on complex technical issues.• M.S. in Aerospace Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park, MD – Focus on numerical finite element methods and composite materials/structures. Graduate coursework included: Finite Element Methods/Analysis (FEM/FEA), Nonlinear FEA, Adaptive FEM and Error Estimation, Stability of Structures, Structural Dynamics, Fracture Mechanics, Composite Materials, Micromechanics of Composite Structures, and Advanced Composite Structures the contents of which focused on failure prediction.• Software Tools: Nastran, Abaqus Femap, MATLAB, Composite Pro, Python• U.S. Citizen / DOD Secret Security Clearance Eligible

Aerospace Engineer
Integral member of the Roman Space Telescope Outer Barrel Assembly (RST/OBA) Mechanical analysis team having contributed design and analysis support for numerous elements: 1) Provided key support to the strength validation efforts, including but not limited to several building block elements/details (composite tubes, joints and sandwich panel inserts). Support often involved generating/documenting pretest predictions and instrumentation layouts required for test readiness reviews; 2) Generated the RST OBA elephant stand (tubular truss structure) composite fully-3D tube FEM using both explicit angle and smeared ply layers. This involved generating a circumferentially segmented tube with segment-dedicated coordinate systems for the explicit ply layer properties. Approach was verified using a benchmark problem based on composite laminated plate theory (Composite Pro); 3)Assisted in developing the RST OBA T300 and M55J composite material interlaminar shear allowables for both room and cold-soak temperatures. Detailed explicit ply finite element models were constructed based on previous program test specimens. Transverse shear allowables were derived iteratively by correlating FEA results and test data using a quadratic failure surface for a given interlaminar peel strength.
Senior Principal Engineer
Senior Structural Engineer
Structural analysis in support of NRL Geo Robotics program for several components including electronics box/board assemblies. Used FEMAP and MSC NASTRAN to perform FEA for normal modes, inertial stress and random base drive runs. Also performed hand/spreadsheet calculations as well as mechanical and thermal fatigue analyses.Conducted analyses of composite adapters for the Minotaur Launch Vehicle in support of Northrop Grumman Launch Systems Division. Task required combined finite element approaches (2D-shells and axisymmetric elements) along with closed-form hand and spreadsheet calculations to estimate the interlaminar tensile stress of curved laminates.
Structural Composites Engineering Manager
Oversee the development and technical review of surface ship and/or submarine design requirements, specifications, system designs, performance analysis, design criteria, design products and design waivers related to composite structures.
