Project Coordinator
I began working with ASAP as a Masters of Public Health student through my practicum project. ASAP is a coalition of pathologists from around the world who advocate for improving pathology infrastructure and training in Sub-Saharan Africa. My practicum project was to create a database of essential equipment and supplies for various tiers of anatomic pathology laboratories in low-resource settings. This is referred to as a "lab-in-a-box" and can be used as a template to build a network of labs to support cancer diagnosis and guide treatment strategies. I am proud to continue working with ASAP on special projects after completing my practicum. The Lab-in-a-Box concept was published in the American Journal of Clinical Pathology in January 2017.
Primary Care Internal Medicine Physician
In addition to serving as a primary care physician for patients aged 18 and above, I was involved in a large project at Kaiser Permanente to improve care delivery. Our goal was to maintain quality care for our patients while reducing cost. In order to achieve this goal, we created a small clinic-within-a-clinic at Lakewood. Our multi-disciplinary team worked on rapid, small changes to our daily care of patients in order to support physicians with high panel sizes. In order to accomplish this goal, our staff (i.e. PAs, RN, LPN/MAs) were encouraged to work at the top of their respective scopes of practice. The project began in May 2013 and continues to the present.
Inpatient Hospice Physician
During my Geriatric Medicine fellowship year, I worked as a moonlighting physician at The Denver Hospice Inpatient Care Center (ICC) in the Lowry area of Denver. The ICC is an inpatient facility that cares for hospice patients with acute care needs, such as active dying or pain crisis. The work that I did for The Denver Hospice helped me develop skills in Palliative Care that added greatly to my training in Geriatrics. I found it very rewarding to offer quality of life to patients facing the end of their lives.
Internal Medicine Resident
3 years of residency training in Internal Medicine. I experienced a wide range of clinical settings, including rotations at the following hospitals:- University of Colorado Hospital- Denver VA Medical Center- Denver Health Medical Center- Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center- Rose Medical Center- National Jewish HealthMuch of my training was in the care of inpatients at some of the hospitals above, including several intensive care units months. I also had a continuity clinic panel at the Denver VA Medical Center. Educational experiences included regular journal clubs, abstract write-ups, and teaching other residents and medical students while delivering clinical care to patients.I participated in a one-month international rotation in the province of Himachal Pradesh, India. This trip was organized through the Himalayan Health Association and provided care to under-served patients in rural areas by setting up a mobile health clinic.
Geriatrics Fellow
One year of clinical training and focus on education in Geriatric Medicine. Clinical experience: I split most of my time between the Denver VA Medical Center and the University of Colorado Seniors Clinic. In addition to outpatient continuity clinics at those 2 locations, I also cared for subacute rehab and long-term care patients at the Community Living Center (at the the Denver VA) and the State Veterans Home (on the University Hospital campus). Caring for patients in their homes as part of the VA's Home-Based Primary Care program was another highlight of my training. I was able to follow 2 patients over most of the year with monthly home visits.Educational experience: As a fellow at a large academic medical center, I had responsibilities in training residents and medical students from the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Not only did I teach trainees, but I also gave numerous talks for my colleagues. These included a Grand Rounds presentation on Accountable Care Organizations, presentation of scholarly articles at journal club, and weekly fellows' conferences on a variety of topics of clinical significance to the geriatric population. A quality improvement project was one more part of my training, and I developed a workflow to reduce sedative-hypnotic use among subacute rehab patients at a local rehab facility.
