Principal EngineerKomatsu America Corp. Oct 1977 - Jun 2013Peoria, Illinois AreaI started my career at WABCO on October 17th, 1977 as a design engineer Product Development and Special Projects. Within a few months my supervisor was transferred to Motor Graders and I followed. A small group of five, including myself, who worked on the Motor Grader product line. I eventually became a Senior Design Engineer in that group and worked on special orders for the product line. [Customer specials which required other than standard equipment be installed.]When the parent company decided to cease production of the Motor Grader and Tractor Scraper product line I was transferred to the Off-Highway Mining truck group where several other engineers and I developed the 100ton mechanical drive truck. This was the first truck that WABCO built where the frame included steel castings. It was also one of the first to utilize the same frame regardless of which engine choice the customer made which was made possible through the use of special engine mounts.I later moved onto the Analytical department where I learned to use SAGS [Structural Analysis for General Structures] which was used to verify basic frame sections through a beam analysis. I also became familiar with SDRC Supertab, GEOMOD and finally I-DEAS which allow us to make solid models and do basic analysis of the wr^2 for various rotating parts as well as mass calculations and the application of solid finite elements for stress analysis. I took a couple of sabbaticals from this position to work on other projects, like the 250-300 ton Coal Hauler project and then returned to the Analytical Group.I left analytical to go to work on a 'skunk works' project for several years which resulted in me designing a new cab structure which ended up on all of the Haulpak trucks after a few years.I retired 28th June, 2013 and I am now back on contract with Komatsu. -

Design, Research & Development EngineerLittle Giant Inc. 1974 - Oct 1977Peoria, IllinoisWorked for a small company that designed and manufactured fork lift attachments and hydraulic cylinders to customer's requirements. The last year I was there I worked solely on an attachment called a "Grip-O-Vac" which handled 1800 lb. rolls of newsprint without damaging the rolls. I traveled to Washington, Oregon, California, Pennsylvania, Boston and the Carolina's while working on this product and a few others; gathering data, returning to design the equipment and then traveling back to the field to install and instruct the new owners on proper installation, operation and maintenance of these pieces of equipment.
