About Cornell University Biomedical Device Project Team (CUBMD)
CUBMB is a Cornell University registered student team with a mission to invent devices as biomedical solutions to global health challenges. CUBMD models a startup environment with thorough biodesign process, market and policy research, patent searches, sponsorship scouting, and sales pitches. As aspiring physicians and engineers, we are inspired to identify contemporary problems in the field of biomedical devices, design and innovate solutions to said problems, and compete in biomedical engineering competitions with our ideas. Our most recent project, InFlux, is a portable infusion pump designed to make drug addiction recovery more accessible. The device works by steadily releasing medical detoxification pharmaceuticals (naltrexone) to users suffering from withdrawal symptoms. Some key features are an infusion needle, a syringe with a piston slowly pressed by a pumping mechanism, pressure sensors, and flow sensors to ensure accurate drug delivery rate. In the past, we've worked on projects such as MelanOxi, which went on to be an Engineering Innovation Competition Finalist. MelanOxi takes accurate measurements of blood oxygen, regardless of skin color. The oximeter analyzes the data from the absorption of light from oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO2) and deoxygenated hemoglobin (RHb), which differ significantly at specific light wavelengths. Physicians will be able to reduce racial disparities in the accuracy of diagnostics.
